First off, the Alternate Voyagers posts will feature discussion about how the tweaking or change of some element of Voyager might have changed the dramatic direction of the show.
For the fist installment, we take a page from Doctor Who and consider what might have happened had everyone lived. Specifically how might Voyager's story have evolved if none of the original crew had been killed during Voyager's initial trip to the Delta Quadrant?
Had Lt. Commander Cavit survived, what role would Chakotay have filled?
If the unseen Chief Engineer had lived there would have been no Carey/Torres competition and thus no member of the Maquis in the command staff.
Had Dr. Fitzgerald and his staff lived, the EMH would have remained offline and there would have been little for either Tom or Kes to do.
Indeed, what happens to Tom if Stadi keeps her job? (I could definately see a love hate arc swirling around those two).
If Voyager had not lost members of its initial crew to the Caretaker, Voyager would have been stuck with essentially 50 passengers (who would not have had warm feelings about Starfleet to begin with).
The tension could only have been worse had Janeway, in the interest of fostering amity, had replaced members of her own crew with Maquis members. One might even say that without the dead crew, there would have been no incentive for Chakotay to even agree to merge the two crews together. What happens then? How do you think the story would have evolved under those circumstances?
