Alpha Protocol - anyone played it?

Has anyone here played Alpha Protocol? Is it any good? I'm specifically looking at the PC version, and it sounds like a decent game... but the reviews online are mixed.

Just wondering what fellow BBSers thought.

Everything I've read about it has been pretty negative. That coupled with the fact that I'm not a fan of the studio behind it has caused me to pass on it.

I was really looking forward to it, but I couldn't even get through the first hour. The controls were completely horrible and clunky, and the game seemed buggy as heck.

Obsidian has good writers, but their programmers are terrible. I used to think all of the problems with KotOR 2 were because LucasArts rushed Obsidian to get the game out, but now I'm not so sure.

Buggy and Broken and the guys who made it have disowned it and laid the blame on the guy who lead the project. Apparantly the big douche giving the orders along with the SEGA kept changing the gameplay and never gave time to polish it. Also it seems the game devs ideas were rejected and the head guy was just in love with himself and his ideas.

or so I hear :p Pity this could of been the Mass Effect of the spy genre.

It basically plays like ME1 - everything's a dice roll. If you can handle that, the game is fine and has some interesting ideas about RPG storytelling.

I got the PS3 version a little while ago. I haven't actually played it yet because I have way too many games on my stack. However now that I just finished Final Fantasy XIII last night, I might start playing AP.

Btw, our local reviewers that I trust much more than any of the big gaming sites (IGN, Gamespot, 1up) actually quite liked the game. So yeah I'm looking forward to playing it.

I played through the PC version about a month or so ago. It was okay. I didn't think it was as bad as the reviewers were saying it was, but it wasn't anything special either.

One thing to note about combat is that it's similar to Deus Ex, the longer you aim at someone the more accurate you get. I could easily see that being a deal breaker for someone looking for a more traditional shooter.

Well, really, most reviewers were complaining about how it was a shooter that played like an RPG... let alone all the random bugs and jankiness.

You can't please western reviewers, which explains why BioWare is going in the direction they're going.

Hmm... you guys aren't making this easy. :p

Thanks for the info... I think I'll give it a pass based on the comments about the controls and bugs. Have plenty of other games to play.

If you're playing it on PC, you might as well just wait for the inevitable Steam sale. It's already gone on sale once during the summer sale.

I liked it quite a bit. I played the PC version. It has some flaws but if you can look past them the game is entertaining.

So I was bored and had run out of other games to play, and decided to give AP another shot. I don't know why, but I've been enjoying it a lot more this time around. Yeah, the controls are a bit clunky here and there and it's got the usual Obsidian wonkiness, but the storyline's pretty neat and I really like the dialogue system (though I wish Thorton's responses weren't on a timer).

Still feels like Obsidian's just trying to copy BioWare and coming up short, though.
