Almost finished trek and love it so far

Hello everyone, first sorry for my english because i'm french and i may make a few mistakes.
I hope i'm posting in the right section
I create this topic to say what i think about trek from my perspective, since i have only known star trek for a few month.

One day in march, i saw one voyager episode on a french paytv channel. The one with the doctor trying to speak to a missile. I liked it so i decided to watch star trek.
I chose to begin with enterprise because 1/ First one in timeline
2/widescreen and good CGI :D
So i begun with Broken bow, and i have to admit that i was kinda lost at the end of the episode. I thought that it would begin with earth first contact with an alien culture so i had no idea what the vulcan were doing on earth.
I found some info online about WW3 and first contact and i understood better.
I whatched Season 1 and 2 very quicky, i was really looking for the next temporal cold war episode each time.
I think that season 1 and 2 were good intro to trek, it introduced vulcan, klingon, andorian and the mysterious romulan. (The fact that daniel was not gonna tell archez about them really made me wonder who they were).
I was a little disapointed with season 3 because i didn't like the xindi that much.
Season 4 premiere was totally disapointting imo, with a totally ununderstandable conclusion to the temporal wold war (never happened yet xindi attack on earth still took place :/ )
I loved the rest of the season, espacially the romulan one.
About the series finale, TATV, it was TOTALY confusing to me, i had no idea who those people were.
I was disappointed because that wasn't much closure to the romulan arc so i wanted to watch TOS.

The jump from TATV to The cage/ Where no man has gone before was VERY DIFFICULT.
There were no way this enterprise could be more evolved than the NX-01, quite the opposite in fact.
The first few TOS episode were totaly boring IMO and i almost stopped watching.
Then there was the first romulan episode and it made me realise that, even without CGI, there could still be great episodes.
For the rest of the serie and TAS, the characters slowly grew on me, even if i still thought most episode were pointless.

In July, i watched the TOS movies. The first one was totally boring, i was waiting for something to finally happen but it never did.
The next 5 were great (exept maybe for the fith).

I started TNG in late July. I was much easier to adapt to TNG that it was to TOS, i rediscovered riker and troy, data had already been pre-introduced in ent season 4, and the enterprise-D seems like a plausable ship.
I didn't like season 1 that much but from season2 to the end, it was great, especially the few borg episodes (good continuity with the enterprise episode by the way, at the end of the borg introduction episode, i remembered arche's word that i had almost forgotten, that they had only postponed the invation)

Then came DS9, even if i preferred TNG 7/8 for DS9 season 1 and 2, starting from season 3 onward it was great.
What i espacially loved is that there fewer and fewer filler episodes as you go into the serie. Season 5 finale was incradible, i never expected them to lose DS9, and when they did, i assumed they would get it back in the season premiere, but i was wrong, it took a very long time to retake DS9, which was more reallistic.

About Voyager, which i'm watching in parallel to DS9, i love the principle of the series, stuck in the delta quadrant, but there were terrible filler in the first 3 season imo, and i hated the kazon.
Season 4 was much better, with year of hell and the whole hirogen-contacting starfleet arc.

I'm actually at mid-season5 for voyager and mid-season 7 for DS9 and i think they both get better as time goes by.
Voyager reintroduced the borg after first contact, and i hope they'll be the main enemy in season 6-7 like the dominion actually is in DS9.
DS9 has some incredible episode,

Finally about the TNG movies, i liked generation as a transition from TOS-TNG but first contact was imo way better.
About Insurrection, i do not hate the movie but IMO it has nothing to do there. It is the middle of the dominion war, and nobody seems to really care. Moreover, Nog just log his leg and quark chose to leave on vacation, sure :/ .

I'm really looking forward to the end of the dominion war and how voyager will handle the borg, i hope i won't be dissapointed.

cool.. i wish i could watch ST like you.. in one organised go... once and for all.. when i am grown up as apposed to kiddie aged..

how old are you btw?

Wow man, I envy your perspective. Being able to watch the series chronologically, like that. I have one question for you:

You said that you found it implausible that the Enterprise 1701 was in business many years after the NX-01 Enterprise. I assume you're referring to the look of the ship, level of technology. I understand that (even though I do not share it because to me the Constitution class looks more 'modern' than the NX class.) When you first saw the Constitution class USS Defiant in the ENT season 4 mirror universe episode, did you have the same reaction and did this episode prepare you for the look of TOS?

I'm 19.
About the look of the ship, in the movies, it already look much more modern.
About the ENT mirror episode, when i saw the defiant, seeing the ENT crew that i already new in the TOS set helped me look TOS. It made a connection, i knew it was still the same universe.

About my first reaction to the defiant sets, well, all those red/yellow tube/wall seemmed very strange at first. I would have never expected this on a starship.

It's probably because i grew up with 2000's tv show, (first scifi show i whatched was stargate season 6).

Welcome to the Trek universe Flobo! it's always great to have new fans.

I understand you wanting to watch all the series and movies in chronological order but it probably would have been best to save Enterprise for last so that everything ties in a little better.

Im glad your enjoying Trek, and dont forget to tell your friends about it! :)

I'm surprised that after nearly completing your Trek journey you haven't looked back at Enterprise's 4th season with more fondness than your initial impression, considering that nearly all the episodes dealt with events which were tied into later series (The Eugenics Wars, "smooth" Klingons, The Defiant, the Mirror Universe, the Organians, Gorn, Tholians, etc.)

About the watching order, from what i've seen, it would seem that most of the people that watched ent in the end hated it so it might have been a good idea to begin with it.
For exemple, many people semms to complain that "faith of the heart" is not star trek. Since i didn't know what was star trek music, i loved this song. I even associeted it with star trek in my mind, when i think of star trek, faith of the heart is the first music coming to my mind (a close second would be the awesome music that is played in star trek generation while picard and kirk are riding horses), i have no idea what it is called, but it made a great impression on me for a music that was only in ONE movie.

I envoyed all series so far (i just got bored a little more in TOS fillers). If i had to rank them in apreciation order, i think it would be

1/DS9
2/VOY
3/ENT
4/TNG
5/TOS
but i still have to finish ds9 and voy to be sure.

EDIT: About enterprise fourth season, the fact that i didn't new the other series prevented me from making easy connections, i had to remember episodes i saw 4 month ago and i had seen hours of episodes between them.
About "smooth" Klingons, i noticed them in TOS then totally forgot about them since there weren't any in the movies. I just remembered about the virus with worf remark in the DS9 episode with tribbles.
I don't remember who are the other were.
Of course i made the connection for the mirror universe and the defiant. (This was confusing btw, Ent mirror universe episode leads into "mirror mirror" which is before the tholian episode, itselft a prequel episode from the ent mirror episode. Causality loop.)

Welcome aboard!

In July, i watched the TOS movies. The first one was totally boring, i was waiting for something to finally happen but it never did.

 Imagine being stuck in a movie theater watching that (after having seen Star Wars just a few years previously, and greatly anticipating the first Star Trek since TOS was cancelled!) I went with my Dad and we were both bored out of our skulls!!! Good thing the movies got better.

And I think when you're done with the whole thing, DS9 will remain #1. ;)

I was eight or nine when I saw ST:TMP and it was after I had seen Star Wars. I was more impressed at the time with TMP but was unaware of the TV show at the time so my focus was always Star Wars but always in the back of my mind I remember this movie about a big starship investigating something very mysterious and looked like it was very real. Wasn't until years later I put it all together and realized that I wasn't supposed to really like TMP. It is still my favorite.

Welcome to Trekdom flobo.

So how exited are you for the new movie now that you've seen most of the Star Trek series?

welcome to Trekfandom, Flobo! how wonderful!! I wish I could be in your shoes just to experience brand new Trek -- ALL Trek -- like you did.

I also love DS9. I daresay that when you finish watching it, you might call yourself a Niner. :D

don't worry about the viewing order. watch them again any which way you want, and every time you watch, you'll discover new things. that's the beauty of Trek.

You are soooo lucky you found one of Voyagers best episodes. Trek is full of crappy episodes, but once in a while, it manages to show why it's so great. :)

I just finished DS9, that was the best serie.
What an ending! I mean, so far, i didn't think much about tatv back then, ie seemed just like another episode. About TOS, the last episode was a standalone, and the end the the 6th movie didn't seem so sad because i knew they would be back in the sequel series.
All good things was a good episode to end the series but it felt more like the enterprise's journey was continuing as always, just that WE (the viewver) were leaving and weren't going to see it every week.

What you leave behind, on the other hand, was very emotional, espacially the last half-hour. Starting with miles leaving his quarter, i couldn't help but cry (espacially mile's flashback and jake's one were really depressing) , it really felt that nothing last forever and that after that, things were never going to be the same.

Welcome flobo!

Like most everyone here I really envy you for being able to watch the series chronologically. I've seen all of ENT, TNG, DS9 and VOY myself but haven't seen a lot of TOS/TAS. I am going through watching the whole series chronologically now. I am just finishing up Season 2 of Enterprise so I have a long way to go even doing a season a week.

Personally my favorite series is Enterprise. But DS9 is a close second. Once you finish Voyager and Nemesis you may want to try asking over in the Trek Lit forum about some books to read if you want more Star Trek to enjoy. :)

edit: I just noticed this thread is over a month old. :-\ If you read this I'm sure we'd all be interested in hearing what you thought of the rest of Voyager and Nemesis. :)

I cannot believe my eyes that people would prefer VOY and ENT over TOS. Its... Unthinkable.

Always difficult for the next generation to appreciate the original series. I wasn't born at that time but TOS is still my second favorite right after DS9.
