All My Enterprises....

Really awesome design and picture. :mallory: It is a starship but the way it looks is also totally different. :techman:

Thanks! You're probably the biggest fan of this design, and that enthusiasm is probably what's kept me working on and tweaking it. I appreciate the love for it. :bolian: I'm always amazed at how others can sometimes find that "something" in something that I'm like "eh, it's okay". I definitely like where this design is now much better than where it started.

So even though I said the last picture was the last for a bit, I couldn't stop thinking about adding a few things that were bugging me with their absence. So I added a quick pennant on the warp engine, the impulse engines, running lights, hangar bay doors and windows on the observation domes on the primary and secondary hull. That's what the dome on top of the saucer is. It's not the bridge. That's a few decks down in a more protected area of the ship. There's two hangar bays, the main one and one for smaller craft like work bee's and travel pods. No need to open the big doors for those. Here's an ortho with all the updates....

Yeah, I really like that design, I was a kid in the 70's and 80's so I remember the way things looked in SF and this design has all that. :D

Not quite an 'Enterprise',

I could see the C-57 D sliding out of that tri-engine arrangement.

One suggestion, if I may. growing up with the Mego bridge set, I was interested in the art of those cardboard inserts for the viewscreen--that some kind soul posted here:

That is, I suppose--a one nacelle iteration of the Enterprise with the bridge making up the totality of the primary hull.

That might make for a nice patrol ship...

Excellent work as always. What I really like is the way the nacelles attach to the hull. It creates a much slimmer profile I think it suits the shape really well.

I do enjoy that piece and have it favorited! Another poster there, Puffinstudios, did a pretty neat version of the Romeluan Eagle from my Star Trek 1955 stuff. It’s a hybrid 60’s version though, but seeing the thing in color was jarring to my eyes. It’s like seeing a color picture of Chaplins Little Tramp. It “feels” off, even though it’s neat to see.

So I was digging around one of my old drives for some music files, and I came across an old art directory from 20 years ago (Holy shit...twenty years!) and found some old comics that I did for my very short lived web comic site. My comics were just whatever I felt like doing, so there were no regular characters. A couple of those comics were a Trek parody called Redshirts! Part of the joke for this concept was that these guys die, but I also didn't want to create new characters every strip, as I liked the Redshirt guy and the Robot, but didn't want it to be like the show where everybody but the main characters were potential cannon fodder. Not being able to resolve that dilemma, I never went beyond these two strips.

As far as I know, no one else had come up with a similar concept at the time, but I could be wrong. But in the following year or two, another comic artist came up with a comic called Redshirts and some years later a sci-fi book was written also called Redshirts. So that killed whatever small interest remained in doing anything with the concept as now it would look like I was riffing off them. But I did get a sense of nostalgia for those days reading these and some of the other strips from then.

Back then I went by the handle "Johnny Atomic". It had the pseudo 50's vibe I was looking for, but a couple of years later found out that there was actually another, and more well known, comic artist going by the same name. I remember thinking "you've got to be kidding me!" over the odds of that. So I ended up changing my handle a few times and settling on "Johnny Radar" because, while it doesn't have the cool Atomic Age vibe I wanted, it has an old fashioned vibe to it. My normal online handle is The Lensman, and has been for about 25 years, but can't really use that as an artist name. Anyway....

Some years back Publiusr asked for some orthos for the Electroprise and since I haven't done too much artwork this year and felt like dusting the ship off and making some much needed tweaks, I went ahead and made some orthos and engine images. Now I was hesitant to post these because I primarily think of the ship as a vintage illustration, not something that should ever be fleshed out or presented in a 'real' fashion as it just doesn't work in that way. The illustration aspect is part of what makes this ship work for me, so I don't like removing that element, but I also figured 'what the heck'. Enjoy
