All My Enterprises....

The Lensman

Commodore
Commodore
I've never started a thread dedicated to all my art, usually it's about whatever thing I'm working on at the time. But I figured I'd start one, mainly for my various Enterprises, but can include other stuff as well. Certain images, as with the one below, really don't need their own thread as they'd die out pretty quickly. With that bloody watermark crap from Photobucket, my old UESPA thread now looks like ass, and I'm still figuring out what to do about that. I will still post new Star Trek '55 images in it's thread, and hope to have some up soon.

Anyhoo......
Some years back I did some faux comic book covers which were a "what if...the incomparable Jack "King" Kirby created Star Trek." I'd always wanted to do the ship which was teased on the first cover, but trying to create in the style of the King, much less in 3d with my piss poor 3d skills always seemed out of reach. For whatever reason, I started tinkering with an undetailed model that's been lying around for a year and ended up with something I'm happy with. It has the crazy shapes and detail that are usually on KirbyTech, though whatever Kirby would've come up with would be far more memorable than this ship. Aside from the Kirbyprise, I don't really plan on doing any other ships or tech in this style.

I suppose this should be a WIP as I intend to color the ship in the same outlandish four colors of a proper Kirby image.

You certainly have the appropriate 'Kirby Crackle" styled background replicated!

"Kirby Crackles"... I still say that sounds like a breakfast cereal! Surely either DC or Marvel slipped in a sight gag with a box labeled such!

Like John Byrne keeps saying about it, Kirby Krackle is more about the shapes defined by the edges of the Krackle, rather than the shape of the Krackle itself. You've done well in that regard, Lensman.

Thanks guys! That design is pretty funky and it's clearly not for everyone. Made some tweaks to the Gagarin (aka Ruskieprise) such as widening the neck and adding windows to it (the neck). Per some old Trek blueprints, I've made that the observation deck and kept the windows limited to that area. Screen cap from that show.....

I don't know why I didn't notice it earlier, but I see the Kirbyprise has "Kirby crackle" type energy patterns pulsing within the nacelle front, uh, "elements". I wonder how something like that would look animated?

I don’t think that model could fire photon torpedoes or launch an orange shuttlecraft…

…but I could be mistaken.

Do you have some of the art (drawn art) with the missile firing Dinky with refit nacelles?

Heck--they said this junior version of the refit had a firing missile:

That doesn't seem right

Continuing my run of doing some much needed and long overdue tweaking of older stuff.....made some modifications to the UNSF-1701 (aka Japaniprise).

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the Rocketprise, using it for the Russian, Japanese and 1955 versions. (Sidenote: While I give these ships names, my personal reference system is adding "prise" to it's most notable, in my mind, feature. Ruskieprise, Japaniprise, Rocketprise, Retroprise, Electroprise, Kirbyprise being the most memorable of these.)

But I wanted to make the Japaniprise more distinct from the Ruskieprise, so I made some modifications that include reducing the size of the rear funnels, adding X fins in the back of the rockets, a straight up fin with a do-dad on top, windows on the neck, rocket engines on the saucer (yeah, the saucer separates when they want to land....plus it's Japanese tech, of course it's a couple vehicles in one. :) ) landing thrusters and pads on bottom of saucer, added some lights to the front of the rocket engines and of course the main maser canon.

I've wanted to add that canon for some time....because I always loved the maser canons from 60's Toho giant monster films, and because the Enterprise has the perfect spot for it! The maser canon retracts into the secondary hull so that it has that bullet look to keep it looking streamlined when "flying".

I. LOVE. THIS. It's what the Enterprise would have looked like if Star Trek had been a 1930s Saturday afternoon serial.

Thanks!

Crackling? :)

Howabout doing the DINKY Enterprise?

I tend to keep to personal designs, but I've had a toy Enterprise mostly done for some time. It's one of the few models where I've experimented with texturing and since you've reminded me of that, I may work on that one next.

Man, I always wanted the DINKY Enterprise and Eagle so bad when I was a kid! Never got one.

There were some nice Toho superweapon art books, IIRC
the one that started them all

Invaders from Mars also had a very busy beam design

This site has some interesting trek covers from Japan--you might also want to flesh them out.

Warped 9 did some nice work on the Best of Trek ships.

That’s some awesome art! Thanks for the link! As for fleshing them out, as I said above, I keep to my personal designs. Also my modeling skills ain’t the best and my computer is a decade old, so I work with basic shapes. Thankfully the stuff I love most and take greatest inspiration from is likewise, generally, basic as well.

Unfortunately that means I appeal to a super small segment of fandom. Most people aren’t really interested in this old looking stuff like a 60’s Toho style Enterprise, Russian or pulp style. But it’s what I do .

A giant weapon ship, last relic of a forgotten war, has destroyed the planets of the Gamma V System and is making it's way to Earth. Piloted by the robotic servants of a long dead species, and following apocalyptic orders given centuries ago, they move from system to system destroying worlds with cold and calculating efficiency. Can the ships of the United Nations Space Force stop them before they destroy the Earth?!

Spoiler Alert:

I don’t know how or why, exactly, but this has a serious Cold War vibe to it. Nice!
