Future Guy is probably one of those pesky Romulans that messes with timelines

A Romulan was our first guess back in the day. Makes me wonder if someone on staff was an Enterprise fan.
After the 2009 movie came out I theorized he was a future Romulan from the 28th century who was trying to change his planet's history in the 22nd so that it wouldn't be destroyed as we later saw. A descendant of survivors of the 2387 supernova who used temporal technology of his own century to influence the past and, hopefully, make his former Empire's destiny a lot brighter.
