Akira (1988).

I remember doing that for a caption contest somewhere around here, complete w/ poorly-edited in Kaneda...

Hmm...

I decided to rent this back when I was in high school to see what all the fuss was about. The plot confused the hell out of me, but I thought the film was visually interesting at least.

I caught it again when it was shown on TV a few months ago -- I must have actually gotten smarter in the past decade or something, 'cause I was able to follow the story this time.

Pretty decent movie overall, IMO. I have little to compare it too as far as other anime films go -- I think the only ones I've seen aside from this are Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke. Both were alright, but still not quite enough to make a hardcore anime fan out of me.

I found that the more recently dubbed version was easier to follow and made more sense. So maybe it is both, you became smarter and the translation was improved.

One of the quirks of the Japanese language. Apparently, if you're fighting and angry at someone or worried about them you're compelled to waste breath by screaming out their name. I don't quite get it, but things like that happen frequently and generally they call each other by name way to much due to different social rules. I think Inu Yasha holds the record for characters saying each other's names pointlessly though.
