Akira (1988).

The ultimate Sci-fi animated feature even from Japan! i love how it has a complex story wrapped in brilliant animation, nice voice acting and bloody violence.

One of my favorites since junior high in 1996 at the age of 15!

I enjoyed it but there's alot of anime that I enjoy more. I heard the blu-ray version is pretty awesome. I'll probably pick that up sometime

Good movie, but OVERRATED!!!!:angryrazz:

Visually impressive and a good story. Although I will say that the story was unnecessarily complicated with too much exposition, so it might be a bit overrated.

Kill the infidel!!!1! Kill him with fire!!!

;)

The animé is visually stunning, i.e. Neo-Tokyo. They tried to cram a lot of things in two hours time. But story-wise, the manga is vastly superior. And definitely anti-imperialism at the end.

Holy poo, has it been 20 years already?!

I remember buying a 15th gen VHS bootleg in Japanese at a convention way back when. I also spent $125 on the Criterion Laserdisc edition!

Context is everything. Remember when this came out, US audiences were used to the Go-Bots and G.I. Joe. This was mind-blowing at the time! Sure there was Robotech in the states, but it did not have the violence or more esoteric qualities that Akira had.

Animation had advanced (in some ways) but Akira still holds up. The more recent dubbings are much better than the original US grunt fest.

are they still gonna try to make a live action version of it?

Yeah, that project is still alive as far as I know.

As for Akira, I've got the film on DVD. It's okay and definitely entertaining but there's quite a few anime movies I like more. I'd agree that the film is bit overrated.

Akira is a great film that still holds up well today (I too would love to own it on BD should I get the chance)

While I agree that there are better anime films out there I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Akira as it is the film that got me seriously into anime, and I think it's a title that works as a good "gateway" film to give people who have never watched anime a general taste of what the medium has to offer and just what it is capable of.

I also think the film has a wonderfully idiosyncratic OST too, especially the soundtrack that plays when Kaneda's gang get into a motorcycle skirmish with the rival gang (the Clowns I think) near the beginning of the film

I still rate it as one of the best animie movies I have ever seen. The comic was even better.
