AICN: Sam Raimi to direct WARCRAFT movie

A movie based on the story/lore behind the Warcraft games (3 RTS games and WoW, an MMORPG). Earlier Warcraft games focused on Humans vs Orcs, later ones added all sorts of other races and creatures, elves, Taurens (gigantic cow people), undead zombies, gnomes, etc.

Wow, great choice for a director. My interest level just skyrocketed. Hopefully this is filled with some real fantasy goodness. In particular, I'd love to see Raimi fit in the "Scourge" and "Undead" stuff! Sam can really hit the serious genre notes and a little bit of Raimi-esque kitsch too. Love it!

Here's the link - they seem pretty sure about this one, no 'sources say' apparently its supposed to hit the trades within a week?

I would rather have him make Evil Dead 4.

I get the sense that he really doesn't care to make that movie for some reason.

He seems less enthused as the years go on for that one... It's like "Yeah, I'll revisit it", then "Maybe" and finally "Yeah, if I have time. Now shut up, I got Spider-man to work on."

I would assume it's gotta be a dual edged sword, coming back to the beginning. You might feel both nostalgic yet as if you are going back...

I've played some WOW. I don't have enough money to play frequently, what with Half Fish and everything (want to know more? Click the links on my sig), so I never actually signed on... But Sam Raimi might add the much needed element of "Fun" that you just can't put into a MMORPG. And I don't mean fun as in the game is not fun, I mean with the tone. SOmething like that needs a bit more self aware silliness (without being overly corny). Sam Raimi should do fine.

The only thing I ever heard about a Warcraft movie was how the Blizzard people stated there was no way in hell Uwe Boll would ever direct a Warcraft movie.

Interesting choice if confirmed. I'm curious what kind of Warcraft movie we're going to get. There's so much you can choose from in terms of story.

Back in the day I would be all sorts of excited about a Warcraft movie.

Now that WoW has taken over the franchise though I dread it.

It'll be like LOTR, but with a Raimi style and a more open story.

The story of a young Orc boy who pines after the girl next door, but is swept off to join the Orc army as they war against the Alliance. It'll be like War and Peace, only less peace, more war, and more Orcs.

With Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi in some role.

Young Orc Boy- Hey baby, it's war

;)

Is he doing this project before or after Spidey IV?
It would have to be after if Spider-Man 4 is going to stay on track for a 2011 release.

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have been planning a Warcraft movie for awhile now. They've said the approach they're taking is that they'll use the Warcraft setting but come up with a new storyline that'll make a great epic fantasy film.

Edit to add: I see it's been confirmed by Variety that Raimi has signed on. They report that Raimi will supervise the development of Warcraft while he makes Spider-Man 4. Charles Roven, one of the producers of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, will be producing Warcraft.

It could work, although I wonder about Raimi's ability to handle big, unwieldy projects after Spiderman III was less than stellar.

In fact, I think he works better as a director when the projects are (compared to the Spiderman films) smaller in scope. I've never been a huge fan of the Spiderman films to begin with.

Still, the content is right up his alley, and it could be fun.

Well, SM3 was more due to Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin butting in. That we got anything coherent was due to Raimi's skill. Warcraft can be goofy and over-the-top while still scary and exciting which is right up Raimi's alley. Also I doubt the producers will mess with it too much. A tongue in cheek videogame movie will be better than one that tries to be too serious.

i'm excited. Raimi's a capable director... i think the problem with spider-man 3 was the writing, not the actual directing.

i am curious what the story for the movie will be...

I wish he'd go back to television. The success of the first Spider-man movie helped ensure a tidal wave of awful comic book movies. We're now going to enter the second decade of graphic novel and video game adaptations dominating the box office. When you add in cardboard cut-out Shrek clones, Hollywood hasn't been in worse shape in almost a hundred years.
