AGT... Enterprise-D inspires Great Yamato # Zero?

Japanese television in 1974 saw the debut of Uchu Senkan Yamato an animated science fiction series which told the story of a mission to save the Earth from an alien invasion.

This series is best known for its namesake, the Space Battleship Yamato, a radically rebuilt WWII Japanese Battleship which has been transformed into a space worthy warship. Designed by Leiji Matsumoto, the Yamato came equipped with an array of powerful weapons and a space warp drive that could jump the ship many lightyears at a time.

In 1979 this series was adapted for US television in the form of Star Blazers. While rather edited, it remains a major inspiration for early anime fandom in the US.

In 1994 a certain group of anime loving Trekkerboiz decided to pay tribute to this series in the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation by sneaking in a few Yamato inspired elements onto a future Enterprise-D

We know who you are.

But, wait, there's more...

In 2004, Leiji Matsumoto created an alternate universe serie of Uchu Senkan Yamato called Great Yamato # 0. I recently discovered this series while doing some research on anime.

The design is an updated version of his earlier Yamato, but there clearly seems to be a few Enterprise-D elements snuck in this time around.

IMO, the saucer section is the only part you could consider an "homage". The rest is pretty much an updated original, as near as I can tell.

Syd Mead designed a radical departure for the Yamato's successor in "Yamato 2520", which had all his design staples. Not a bad attempt, but overall too much for the viewers of the ultimately cancelled show.

Sorry, any design similarities that are in there are almost too vague to attribute to being inspired by the other. Most of them are commonalities found in many sci-fi ships.

Got the series on tape. It was supposed to run 4 episodes IIRC. It only got as far as 3 due to the production company going bankrupt and a copyright dispute.

Know nothing of the Yamato show, but the AGT Enterprise is my favorite Sci-Fi ship ever.
