Adjectives which may or may not be species

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Let's make a list for various qualifiers that were never said to be species in canon (MA canon), but which may have been said to be species in books or elsewhere.

*Ventanan
*Mantickian
*Frunalian
*Kotakian
*Trabalian
* Teldarian
* Alkian

What is the whole obsession of some fans about Canon, why put a qualifier on if something actually happened or not in a fictional environment.

I would think this thread will only make sense if you narrow it down to adjectives that are actually defined as being from species names in the novels. Otherwise it's nearly all adjectives.

My intent was to compile a list of possible races that others could draw from. Alternately, you could define them however you want. This aids people in finding things that have already been used but only in the context of a ship or food.

For example (made-up examples) "Herpogian passenger vessel" might indicate a race of Herpogians. "Yamnulan anchovy" might indicate a planet or race named Yamnula(n)s.

I realize authors like to make up new things (so do I) but this is an offshoot of the first and last names project - to let people know what has and hasn't been expanded on, and how.

Right, but I think trampledamage's point is that all unidentified adjectives could potentially be species names (even ones that don't end in -an or something similar), so this would end up just being a list of all invented adjectives used throughout screen Star Trek.

Yes, but a little pointless for this forum I think - we're here to discuss the literature, not create lists of all the adjectives used in a book.

If your list involves discussion of why any particular adjective is a species name, based on your reading in the novels, then I'll allow it to continue.

Breen. (We all THOUGHT that was a species. Until we found out otherwise.)
Xindi. (Several different species, which may or may not be any more closely related than we are to, say, an iguana.)

It's kind of related to the project @ryan123450 and @Extrocomp helped out on - listing possible species names said in the shows and movies to aid writers, just as we created a list of alternate names for characters in books, etc.

* Silvan
* Gorlan
* Gorokian

Except that thread is actually putting together information from the shows and the books, this is just you listing words that may or may not be species.

Like I said - if you include reasons and discussion as to why you think these might be species, then fine, but if it's just listing words then it's gone too far outside of what's relevant for this forum.

Okay, well, here's one rationale: given that the species name is often a qualifier for a ship, such as "Klingon battle cruiser", "Vulcan survey ship", etc etc, if we saw a ship called a "Nufmoic trawler", then you could infer there may be a race called the Nufmoi(c). Not enough to create an article for the "race" on Memory Alpha, but in your imagination you could suppose that.

"Frunalian", for example, appears in "Frunalian science vessel".

Not necessarily, it could be a company that makes them, or the person who invented them. Things like that are IMO way to vague to assume it is an alien race.

Fair enough, I guess. You can interpret it however you want, but at least you'd have a list of qualifiers at your fingertips, ready to interpret and use however you wish.

Laura, this is going nowhere. In my imagination I can suppose lots of things.

If you honestly think that such a list would be useful or interesting, then why don't you create a page on the Memory Omega site?

Laura, if you want me to move the thread to Gen Trek I can, I won't otherwise because I don't really see the value of doing that.

Pretty much anything about the books that can be discussed will get a good response here - but it's the sharing of ideas and arguments that get people interested - we can never resist a good argument :D
