Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has said that the company will never charge for "out of the box" Call of Duty online multiplayer.

The publisher is exploring new ways to better monetise the genre leading first person shooter series, and persistant rumours have suggested online subscription charges will be introduced, but that isn't on the agenda, ever, according to Hirshberg.

...At the end of the day, all I'm trying to get across is I can unequivocally say we will never, ever charge for the multiplayer.

Looks like Activision aren't the big bad money-grabbing, fan-milking bastards people claim.

good.

i hate the idea of having to pay for DLC, but charging for out-of-the-box gaming is beyond the pale. at least paying for DLC is optional.

The funny thing is, it was the paranoid, Activision-hating side of the online community who invented these subscription rumours in the first place. It would have been their own stupid fucking fault if Activision had decided to run with that idea. As it stands, Activision have shown them up for what they are; paranoid, doomsaying crybabies.

Do they really need to better monetize a game that makes them hundreds of millions every year already?

There's a rumour that 3rd parties are getting a cut of XBL Gold subscriptions now, so maybe that's enough for the time being.

Of course they don't need to charge YET...they already make enough money from making shorter and shorter games for £42 per copy. :p

not including DLC
