Ackerman, Sci-Fi's Grand Old Man, Dies

I can't help thinking of everything that was in this guy's head: All the people, the places, the experiences, the stories, the movies-- all the history that he not only saw but was a part of. He left a lot behind for us, but the essence of it, the reality of the man who embodied it, is gone. He was one of a kind and there will never be another like him. :(

Last year or the year before, I heard an interview he did with Chase Masterson on an Internet Radio program; while it was quite heartwarming to hear all of his pleasant reminiscences, it was also very sad to hear him sounding so old and knowing that his life was drawing to a close. On top of everything else, he was an incredibly nice guy.

RIP, Forry. :(

Aw man, I meant to post about this, I think it was last month's Ansible saying he probably didn't have long. Also surprised it took this long for someone to post this.

He was a great, and he will be missed.

He was lucky to be able to live such an enchanted life and for a LONG time.....

He will be missed - I live a few miles from his home.

R.I.P. Forry

Man, I just finished a compilation of his, and noticed the obituary on the web and realized who it was.

He seems like everything a true scifi geek should be. Rest in Peace.

And another one... :(
I just finished posting my condolences for Betty Page.

Wow. A great life he had. :)

RIP.

I had the pleasure of meeting Forry many times, my most memorable of course being a tour through the Ackermansion. However much sci-fi, fantasy and horror memorabilia you can think of...Forry had more than that stuffed into this house in the Hollywood Hills. OMG. I do hope somebody photographed it all before he sold his house a few years back...

It was a truism amongst fans that the first person you saw at a convention was Forry (which naturally sparks the question of whom would be the first person Forry saw). A sweet guy, all around. A true gentleman.

Rest in peace, sir. Say hi to Lon, Boris, George Pal and Hugo for us.

.

I bought the Spock ears from "Amok" that Celia Lovsky gave to him.....they were a gift to her from Nimoy. They sold privately at a preauction sale in the 80's.

I would love to get my hands on some of that stuff.......

I met Forry on two occasions - at the 1989 Worldcon, in Boston, and the 2006 Worldcon in Los Angeles. At the Boston Worldcon, even though I'd only been in fandom for about three years, I already knew about him and his contributions to the genre. I asked him to autograph my programme book, which he did, happily. Truly a great gentleman.

I never got to tour the Ackermansion, though. :(
