About this ship... this living ship...

Populated by strange alien lifeforms that became my friends. I am talking about the Enterprise-D however when it developed its own intelligence in the episode Emergence.

Does intelligence mean sentience? Was the Enterprise actually alive? Did it have its own personality? How does one describe the personality of a starship?

The only clues we have are on the holodeck. We know the ship conciders the survival of its 'lifeform' more important than the lives of the crew aboard it. We know it was willing to defend itself, even get mad at the crew (on the holodeck) for interfering with it.

Simple natural mothering? Or a bad tempered vessel that doesnt care for other lifeforms?

It's hard to say. Recently someone asked how long it was between the end of S7 and Generations, and there was a gap there. Would be a good topic for a novel.

Having rewatched the show last year, apparently the ship briefly attained sentience for the purpose of constructing a new lifeform, and with the task complete the life ended.

It'd be wrong to say it had a personality; rather the several subsystems had their own personalities, as was depicted on the train simulation on the Holodeck.

I knew it was short lived and only an episode long but I always wondered what would happen if the life form returned. Would the Enterprise form its intelligence again, could it go a step further and actually become sentient.
