ABC News - Gibson Leaving, Sawyer In

Mysterion

So, looks like Charles Gibson is hanging it up at the end of the year, and Diane sawyer is taking the reins at World News Tonight on ABC.

Prediction: Sawyer will kick Couric/CBS ass in the ratings, disproving all the folks who say Couric's poor ratings are due to her gender.

Unless Sawyer eventually leaves GMA, I don't see her lasting there more than a year (two, tops).

Haven't heard as much, but I'd assume she will leave GMA to do World News. Can't see someone doing both jobs at the same time, at least not very well.

Do we really need dedicated evening news anchors anymore? In the old days, we got our news from the daily paper in the morning and Walter Cronkite in the evening. Now, we are surrounded by constant news from cable and even more online. It is rare when the evening news anchor delivers something that we don't already know about, and we know about it in greater depth than a half-hour news program can get into.

Whereas Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings were the Anchors, Katie Couric and Brian Williams seem to be just more faces on the television, repeating what has already been said.

I kinda give a damn. Not about Sawyer vs. Couric, but that Charlie Gibson is retiring. One of the few very vivid memories from when I was an itty bitty kid was watching Charlie Gibson covering the news during the Gulf War. I remember I even had a sort of crush on him. :)

During the Election in November, I stuck with Charlie. Unfortunately, KC's local ABC affiliate LOVES to cut into regular programming with their news, so I didn't even get to see Charlie Gibson announce Obama's win. I'm still po'd about it.

I'm going to miss Charlie Gibson. He's one of the last true professional newspeople. On CNN, FOX, and the other networks they are personalities and most of them put a conservative or liberal slant on the news.

One of the things I remember Walter Cronkite saying is "it's about the news, not me" and that's the way Charlie Gibson comes across. You always feel like you are getting the news story without any personal opinion thrown in. He will be missed.

I really don't care about this at all. I never watch this. I don't pay attention to tv news. There is very little real content in it.
