ABC is developing a new Charlie's Angels TV series

Given that Barrymore is involved, I wonder if this will be a continuation, rather than a reboot.

Why reboot? Even the Barrymore movies were subtlely mentioned as continuations. That's how it always should be.

Oh, but bring back the guns.

Well I don.t see the draw. The premise has been overtaken by real world changes in society and gender roles. The original played with the ideals that the women became "Angels" because their departments wouldn't let women be real police. That is no longer a fact and as private detectives why would they have guns except in the most dire circumstances

The Bionic Woman. Knight Rider. 90210. Melrose Place. They're all reasons why network execs should be shying away from projects that are re-makes of other projects right now. Battlestar Galactica was a fluke. A rare success. It's obvious that it was the exception to the rule.

So far, V has been doing okay enough. The Prisoner is on tonight and I'm eager to see how they handle it. But for the most part, old TV shows don't deserve to be remade. There are very few ideas that were all that good the first time around.

Why not just change the premise to acknowledge that the leads are vastly more attractive than the average policewoman and therefore have been selected precisely for their looks. And why would you do bother to do that, just for average police business? Clearly their job is to pose as hookers so that they can infiltrate some high-level crime syndicates and whatnot.

This is sounding more like a CIA type show than a normal cop show. But that might be something that could interest me.

Most movies and TV shows featuring private detectives are made for entertainment rather than realism. In real life most private detectives rarely carry guns because their investigations rarely involve violent criminals. Movie and TV private detectives, on the other hand, routinely come up against violent criminals, so it's natural for them to carry guns.

^I must concur with my esteemed colleague.

Or to put it another way...Are they f***ing nuts??!?!?!?

How about something original, or based on a novel? There are dozens of novel series which could be turned into television series. We don't need another rehash of another cheesy 80s show.

70's show actually, but I agree with the rest of your comments.

What's the difference between a continuation and a reboot? Are people that worried that the adventures of Sabrina and Jill are still canon?
Right. I want the adventures of the original Angels to be part of the history of a new show, like TOS was for TNG.

As for the guns, I don't care either way, but it should definitely be a breezy adventure show and not a realistic crime drama.

Networks might as well surrender and produce only reality. They still manage an occasional hit but then seem to implode by the second or third seasons.

I don't know If you know any PI's for real, but my uncle was one for thirty years till he had enough of what he called "late night gun raids", and went into the computer business. So, I can tell you that at least some of them (when I was a kid he introduced me to his business partners) do in fact, carry guns. In fact, it was my uncle (much to my mom's displeasure) who taught me how to use a gun.
