A Walk in the Woods

knightgrace

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
The well dressed young woman, was walking down a long corridor, and something was bothering her, she was in the process of preliminary reading of a report, that was very critical of one of the member nations. As she walked down the long corridor, her nose started twitch, with a sense of something not quite right for this section of the long corridor. She had worked in this facility for two years and knew every smell that could be expected to be present. As she approached the end of the fourth story long corridor, her senses finally triggered into full professional paranoia. She looked up and around, drawing her nine mm service weapon, a weapon that she had worked very hard to master, for at five foot five inches, she was towards the bottom end of acceptable height and weight for service here...As she turned the corner she realized that there was more than a small problem, reaching over to the alarm switch, and flipping it twice, indicating to the security center that an intrusion had occurred, she looked upon a full flegged forest poking into the corridor, stepping into the halfway point where the corridor wall would be, she froze and listened. Pulling out the barrel extension, she screwed it on.
As she stared at the Impossibility she heard scampering - no insects, a couple of birds, the ground squished under high heels, which is why she didn't go much further, yet. She wasn't stupid.
In her hearing four sets of dress shoes were coming up. Two sets were of two of her male coworkers, the other two were two of her female coworkers. Lockdown was occurring.
Upon seeing the problem, one of the men went into a nearby storage room and retrieved a set of boots for her.
She had done right. She maintained security control. The coworkers finished assembly of their service weapons into something more usable. More were coming... three moved forward, the two men following behind her giving her first claim. The last was scanning the woods with her gun sight. As first in, she remained standing, while the two male coworkers crouched and moved out ten feet.

It was two hours later.
Full dark outside the establishment.
But on the other side, it was obviously around seven anti meridian. A Light Infantry Company had been brought in to assist in holding the ground on the other side. One Platoon was deployed around the anomaly, the other two, were deployed out to the nearest visible hills, with each of the visible hills extending above the treetops by at least three times that height, with the farthest being five times the height of the treetops. At the top of the highest hill, was the organizations team, looking over unbroken forest. In the far distance was a series of smoke columns, which even through binoculars wasn't really distinctive enough to say anything about them. The team here had st up numerous wire lines to receive radio frequencies. Three telephone lines had been run from here back to the anomaly.
No detected radio signals had so far been found. Not shortwave, nor longwave. Using the equipment already brought in, nothing was found. The initial team members were asleep in their sleeping bags, with small heaters in their tents. For it had been quickly discovered that despite the apparent warmth, it was 45° out. Clothing for a late fall had been provided.
One of the team members was unusual in that she was scheduled to leave her work, but this event had thrown everything into chaos. For she was now seven months pregnant and now considered to be too valuable for immediate dispatch from her job. Her husband, was therfore brought in. He was a bit angry to say the least, but happy that he was remembered at least. Though in truth to tell he was there in part because he was an amateur sky watcher - hadn't been told that part yet.
