I remember seeing a number of references to Greek mythology in both Trek lit and on the small screen. I recently had a wild idea that would be one heck of a Voyager fic if I could pull it off.
I thought of a planetary system where the inhabitants are sentient creatures from Greek Mythology with a roughly 24th Century level of technology (i.e. the Laestrygonians live on one continent, Gryphons live on another, Centaurs live on a far moon). How they got all the way to the Delta Quadrant is a mystery found only in one of their myths (a Preserver connection. The creatures disappeared because they were threatened on Earth).
The ruler of this planetary system is Geryon, the three headed and torsoed giant. A just and fair ruler Geryon's influence is waning because of the machinations of several disatisfied underlings seeking to overthrow him. The chief plotter is the shapeshifter Proteus.
Voyager finds itself embroiled in a civil war amongs these creatures of Greek myth and legend while exploring the Laestrygonian moon seeking dilithium. Voyager makes contact with this race and during the negotiations winds up right in the middle of the coup.
Bear in mind this is only a planning stage idea. I wonder how a planet populated by various sentient creatures of Greek mythology would be like and am toying with the idea.
