A TOS-Era Romulan Ship (GEMINI)

Sam McCord

Lieutenant Commander
Well, I was thinking of new designs for alien ships for GEMINI, to show that aliens also have various ship classes, and not just the UFP. I was thinking about how it is said that the Romulans and Klingons shared some tech in the TOS era, and I wanted to kind of run with that. So below is the first sketch of a concept I'm working on for a Romulan ship... it'll serve a "troop transport" role. I am going to refine this design in Illustrator.

Okay... I have drawn up the "blank" for the first major shape/form... the primary hull. The primary hull is the same as on the Romulan BOP, so I am just going to clip the end of it a bit when I adjoin it to the aft D7 section.

Are you going to do any more views from other angles?

I'll be honest with you, it looks like a simple kitbash at the moment. Rather than trying to create a ship which mixes elements of the two races design philosophies, you glued the front of one to the back of another. Are you going to be using this as a template and reworking it into a more coherent ship design?

A nice idea, but The Axeman is right about the kitbash look, not that kitbashing is a bad thing.

I did a BOP from an Enterprise-E kit, here.

The back section of your design is fairly close to a Klingon D7 with different nacelles and no impulse drive section thingy.

Hmmm ... it looks to me like the main part of the Klingon engineering hull has the same sides as the back half of the Romulan hull. Perhaps if you simply attached the Klingon "wings" to a slightly longer Romulan hull, then added Klingon details such as the Klingon shuttle bay and warp engines, you'd get a cleaner blend of the two ships?

Back in the early days of Starfleet Battles, when the Romulan War Eagle supposedly added Klingon engines to a warbird, I kitbashed a mini by using the engines from an F-5 frigate attached at the lower rear of the Warbird hull. It worked so well we wound up building a squadron of them. You might want to look at something like that.

Thanks for the comments, all. The design is actually meant to be a simple kitbash, using some extra model parts I have available, so I'm not going for anything hyper-realistic-looking in terms of construction... just something simple that would show the sharing of tech between Romulan and Klingon. I might post a side view, IDK yet.

I like it reminds me of a idea i had using Miranda Saucer and Klingon K'T'inga :) :klingon: :rommie:

A did a lot of lead miniature modifications back in the day, fantasy, sci-fi.

I'll use line drawings to demonstrate. I merged 2 FASA Romulan ships,
a V-30 Winged Defender

& a CS-2 Graceful Flyer

to make this:

They fit together like they were meant to be. I'm not 100% on the angles of the second "merged" pic, I'll have to find the miniatures to be certain.

My buddy eibbor from the Okudagrams.com site was kind enough to whip this quick render up:

Hmmm, If it's a meld of romulan and klingon tech, I would think they would keep the superior technology klingon warp engines.

With a little more rounding of the "wing", it would resemble a D'deridaex class a little in that it would look more straight Romulan.

Yep ... in 3D it does look better than the simple plan suggested. But I agree about keeping the Klingon warp nacelles.

OR ...

Come up with a variation on the old Romulan nacelle that suggests it, too, is a melding of technologies.
