A ST:NV director to attempt a crowdfunded original series

I just got an email I've posted the first part of, presumably because I've been a ST:NV donor. I've only quoted part of the email to not make this post too long.

Mark Edward Lewis here. Director of Star Trek: New VoyagesMind-Sifter
and the upcoming exciting release of “Torment of Destiny” in addition to being Post Production Supervisor on “Kitumba” and “The Holiest Thing.” Please accept my deepest gratitude for the extremely generous donations you’ve made which have kept James Cawley’s vision of the continuing missions of the crew of the Enterprise alive.

As honored supporters of Star Trek: New Voyages, I'm excited to give you a front-row seat to an original sci-fi series I’m producing called “Blade of Honor.” You’ll know many of the cast and crew from Star Trek: New Voyages including Brandon Stacywho plays Spock, Rivkah Raven Wood who played “Dr. Jan Hamlin” and “Natira,”Tobias Richter, and Pony Horton who do all the visual effects, and a host of actors who you know from the mainstream including Richard Hatch (BattleStar Galactica),Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager), James Kyson (Heroes) Cirroc Lofton and Aron Eisenberg (Star Trek: Deep Space 9) and Alison Haislip (G4, Battle Bots). All of us help Blade of Honor boldly go in to the future of fan supported television.

On the plus side, at least it's original and not just another fanfilm.

On the minus side the trailer wasn't the least bit compelling, and I don't remember one damned thing that was said. The bearded guy looks bored throughout.

I'm kind of intrigued. I think Tim Russ would make a good futuristic Bill from Kill Bill. (Did anyone else check out his ears?)

If this is an original series, does it belong in the Fan Productions section? Maybe just the generic Science Fiction and Fantasy section?

Well, we've tolerated the slug's-pace Polaris here for what seems like millennia with no apparent harm done. ;)

I think this may be evolutionary - Tommy Kraft's striking out in a new direction, and given the personnel and apparent target audience for this one it seems likely that if anyone is interested in it they're most likely to be the folks browsing this forum.

Do we have a "What constitutes a fan film" discussion topic going on? Maybe it's time for one.

I was just thinking the same, however it does have a number of actors from Star Trek fan productions in it.

There are a number of these poppin up - Nobility, 5th Passenger, Space Command, Unbelievable!!!, independent sci fi projects for the web featuring Star Trek veterans from in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

All using Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, similar flavour to Trek but without upsetting CBS

Generally I'd define "fan films" as movies based upon an existing property that belongs to someone else, so I see Greg's point here. I just think that this forum remains the best place for discussions of these non-studio, fan-oriented projects.

I suppose an alternative, perhaps too limited, definition might be movies directed at genre aficionados as a core audience that use direct fan appeals to fund themselves.

Even the best of the fan films wouldn't pass for professional/commercial Trek shows, in various ways. I would say they are all expensive hobby projects. And that's not meant as a dig at any of them.

Call me crazy, but I liked the trailer. Had the mood and feel of a low-budget Dark Matter.
To me, Dark matter itself seems pretty low-budget.

Is it just me or do you get a BSG reboot feel to the trailer....and personal force fields aside they really need to wear helmets

Okay, about the trailer -

For something that long, I'd like a lot more character and story, and a lot less bombast.

Also, space combat as such doesn't excite me any more.

And all of that said - this thing got my attention, and I'm sure I'll spend some money on it down the road. So...mission accomplished, I guess.

I guess the question is this a forum for fanfilms or fan produced productions? The title reads like the latter.

An advantage of remaining in the Fan Production section is visibility, which may help in marketing the production (or given the current climate, maybe not?) I guess there should be some criteria such as the producers or cast having been involved in previous Trek productions? .

From their Kickstarter website: (underlines by me) this part of the story gives me pause until I hear more.

The Story

Blade of Honor takes place in the year 2187 where the human Alliance is losing the war against the animal race, the Calinar. It is the story of Arina Kartades who is a religious, headstrong, crack Alliance Navy Star Blade pilot. When she discovers that her State mandated religious upbringing was a lie, she embarks on a forced quest to discover the true reasons behind the war with the Calinar, but when her discoveries place her in harm’s way against her religious beliefs, her military vows, her murderous rage episodes and her fiancée Terry Lindon who is her CAG aboard the Alliance Carrier Hermes, she fights a cloak and dagger war of secret rebellion in order to expose the galactic elite, route the heresy of the peoples’ religious masters and protect the ones she loves from the clutches of her own superiors and the combined military might of the Alliance and Calin

Why does that give you pause? People confronting the beliefs they'd blindly accepted is good dramatic fodder.
