A song for Khan!

I'm not sure that I ever drew a STAR TREK character even when I was a kid, I've always found my inspiration elsewhere. But when I see other people applying their creative energies towards their love of STAR TREK, it's usually not a good product, but the affection this franchise gets afforded is often impressive in its own right. People love it and they want to be a part of it. Whether that's through writing Fan Fiction, or making up songs, or basing home movies off of their favourite series ... I don't know. On one hand I want to be overly critical because the talent is very often just not there. But it comes from the heart and that's not something every commercial product inspires in people.

What a horrible thing to say. It's people like you that keep others from wanting to put themselves out there.

Even I've gotten the Simon Cowell treatment. Impossible, yes ... but it's true. For example:

At my friend Carla's house one night with some other artist friendss, everyone's in the dining area at one point and she's in another room. I mosey on over to her accoustic guitar and ask, "may I?" And she gives me her usual sarcasm, with, "... Are you gonna rock me, Frakes?" I assure her, most confidently, that she is, indeed, about to get ROCKED!!! Everyone else is continuing to make all of this chatter ... not a glance do they give us. It may have affected my performance, now that I look back on it, but in any case ... I performed for her entertainment. And hers alone.

I began to play.

She didn't react, really, or say anything, she just sort of sat there and listened for almost half of the song, then suddenly ... she kind of reaches out. She started fumbling around, pressing her pretty hands against the strings, as if searching for the "off" switch and goes to me, "Ugh! ... I hate it." Who would've ever suspected that from such beauty could come such ugliness? As those words burned in my ears ... I died inside! But I smiled. I remained calm.

It's like that with any criticism put forward. If it's anything I can use, great! Otherwise, it's just opinion and attitude. Regardless, though ... and this is the point and moral of this story: I keep on rockin' just like I should. Even the beautiful and opinionated Carla is rendered powerless against such grim determination!

I'm glad my song provoked some response (negative or otherwise)! It really is a one-joke thing. I was just sitting in the garden and I thought it would be funny to insert the 'Khaaaan' scream into a tender song. I tried not to let my musical abilities (or inabilities) get in the way of the joke. Or maybe they enhance it? I don't know...

I sympathise with your story, 2TakesFrakes. I, too, have been asked to stop playing guitar at peoples houses when, in the middle of a party where everybody is laughing and talking happily, I pick up the acoustic guitar and begin playing Leonard Cohen songs. For some reason, it never goes down well :)

(Surprisingly. Surely a line like "You've used up all your coupons except the ones that seem to be written on your wrists...along with several thousand dreams" would kick any party into overdrive?)

I once reduced a few people to tears with my rendition of Don Macleans 'Vincent' (and I don't think it was due to the tenderness of my delivery).

And you'll be glad to know that, undeterred, I went and wrote a parody song about Darth Vader too! (I think this one is ok, well, up until the point where I absolutely murder the chorus...but stick it out...it gets better after that...)

(Yes, I realise that's exactly what Ed Wood said in the Tim Burton movie: "Oh, the last movie was the worst thing you ever saw? Don't worry. The next one will be better!")

Here it is...

I'm pretty sure Jonathan Frakes felt in love with Star Trek and he had to apply his creative energy to direct Star Trek stuff.

I sympathise with your story, 2TakesFrakes.
These words please me. And I appreciate, also, your not taking an alarmist's postion - as some have - to my very broad observations on Fan Creations, in general. Indeed, you've already begun to receive compliments for your Khan Song. Eggs and tomatos go hand-in-hand with standing ovations. The same with Razzies and Oscars. What's fashionable and trendy today is risible tomorrow. As tastes waiver and opinions change, the one constant is Creative Expression. And I don't know of anything more Human than that ...

I thought you made a valid point. As I'm not really a musician (I just recently started experimenting with the guitar and I've never had any confidence in my ability to sing - I like to sing, though, so I don't let that stop me!), I don't expect anybody to be in awe of my musical creations! Some days I can hold a tune, other days (most days!), I can't.

I can play some reasonably decent instrumental blues on my guitar but I still haven't worked out how to play well and sing at the same time.

I'm glad to have introduced myself to the BBS. This seems like a fantastic community of like-minded people. I'm actually going to watch some TOS later today (I don't think any weekend is complete without some TOS) and it's nice to know that I'll be able to put my thoughts on this message board afterwards.

... Smashing! Despite my not being all that popular on this forum, or having anything to do with the maintaining of the site itself, allow me to welcome you, sir! In much the same way that a hostess on a flight - who is only just arriving at the destination herself - will welcome you to the city or country you're arriving at, as though she were the Mayor's Wife. I hope you enjoy your stay.

You posted like FIVE poems in the Star Trek poetry thread.

So seriously, knock it off.

Quite so. And all are open to criticsm! Ergan, follow the link that teacake provided. I'm curious as to how my Fan Creations will be received ...

I think a lot of the Star Trek fan fiction is fantastic. Don't dismiss it all as amateur rubbish. Of course a lot of its bad like conventional novels. But you can usually get something out of even the badly written ones because as 2Takes points out the love is there.

Anyway I thought I'd post this because I like it and its sort of a parody song:

Good point, CommishSleer. Everybody takes their inspiration from somewhere. The source of a persons inspiration has no bearing whatsoever on their actual talents. Just because one artist is inspired by orchids and another is inspired by a sci-fi show, that doesn't mean that the latter is necessarily a lesser artist.

Victor Hugo, after all, wrote 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' simply as an advertisement to raise people's awareness of Notre Dame cathedral, so the city council would not tear it down. The reasons for the novel do not detract from his ability, however.

Also, Virgil wrote 'The Aeneid' as an explicit imitation of Homers 'Odyssey', so the Romans could have their own epic poem. Again, that doesn't make Virgil a lesser poet, it just means that his inspiration came from a different source.

Also, just because 2TakesFrakes took the inspiration for his poems from Star Trek, does not mean his abilities, as a poet, are weak. I thought his poems were fairly good.

I really enjoyed the YouTube clip you posted. Was that the actual TV spot? If so, it must be one of the best of all time!
