No need to overthink this and get fancy with the Federation falling or civil wars, just give us some good basic entertainment.

A-flipping-men. Good writing does not need a complicated story, and in fact an over-complicaqted story is usually a sign of piss poor writing.

TOS was so simple story-wise it was as much a series of parables as anything else, but it had such a winning style, winning characters and (when it was good) great writing that it became a classic.
