A question About Terminator: TSCC...

How is it faring as far as ratings are concerned on Friday and what do networks consider successful on Fridays considering that Friday nights have notoriously low ratings.

I ask this because I'm wondering what the point of moving a show to Friday is if by simply putting a show on Friday it's going to guarantee crappy ratings. Why not just cancel it?

Or, do they use a different matrix for determining success on Friday nights?

Terminator's ratings have gone down following their move to Friday nights; however, DVR and online viewing has increased. Fox is, according to the Producers, considering this in their decision to give the show a third season.

Because Season Two ends on a cliffhanger.

I flipping hope so. This is in my top 3 of favorite shows with Lost and 24.

Is the anticipated success of the new film having any bearing on this?

I think even if they gave the show just one more season, I would be happy.

I'm curious, odes the cable company have the ability to monitor my DVR recordings and viewing? I would think that they should be able to d othis and that it would be a good thing.

It may help save it because of feared negative press if a show based on the series is cancelled before the new movie comes out. Warner Brothers admitted that they sell it basically dirt cheap to Fox and they've bought a lot of ad space during the episodes (which is why ratings are important).

Fox can read if the episode is DVRed and how soon it is watched after being DVRed. They prefer it being watched within three days rather than after that. They also count online viewing through the Fox website.

I would think that online viewing is even more important to them because you are forced to watch the ads and can't fast-forward through them.

Well, you sort of answer your own question there. If it's expected going in that Friday-night shows automatically get lower ratings, then naturally the margin for success would have to be set lower, or they'd have nothing at all to show on Fridays.

And that pretty much is the case. FOX is aware that Friday-night shows tend to build their audiences gradually and have smaller, more loyal fanbases, so they do indeed hold Friday shows to different standards of success. They're being more patient about TSCC and Dollhouse than they would with other shows, they're allowing for the intrinsically lower ratings expectations of Friday nights, and they're taking delayed-viewing ratings into account (which is good news, since the delayed-viewing figures are excellent for those shows).

Well, yes and no.
Josh Friedman has said that the season finale does bring closure to the season's main arcs, but it has enough of a cliffhanger element to lead into a new season. So if it were the series finale, it would provide a fair amount of resolution.
