Spoilers A question about Spock

Cadet49

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
At the beginning of Beyond, and in one trailer, when the Enterprise is under attack, we see Spock head to the turbo lift, and clearly flips his phaser from the "blue" setting (stun) to the "red" setting (kill). I know the ship was under attack, but hasn't it always been a sort of unofficial rule on Star Trek to attempt to stun an opponent first, before setting phasers to kill? Why go straight to the deadly setting?

I guess he really, really hates them. Or knows that stun won't work. In the 2013 video game, Spock always encourages Kirk to stun rather than kill, and gets upset when he does kill an infected person.

Shouldn't this thread have a spoiler alert?

Because the Swarm clearly can't be reasoned with. It's obvious all they want to do is kill, so Spock thought it logical to kill them first.

. I didn't think I needed a spoiler warning, because both the attack and the shot of Spock in the turbo lift appear in the trailer - it's clear in every trailer that the Enterprise is attacked. However, I'll see if I can add a spoiler warning ... Just in case

Reports may have come in suggesting stun is useless. Or, scans may have revealed they are drones and not sentient life forms. Not everything needs to be spelled out.

@Cadet49, I've received your PM but am unable to reply to it, so I'll say here that I've amended the thread title to read as you suggested.

My apologies for the substitution I made for your original title, but I was unsure re: the degree of spoiler-ness it might have and prefer, this soon after the movie's release, to err on the side of caution. What's written in the thread title can too easily be read on the Main Index page and elsewhere by someone who may have been trying to avoid spoilers.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience.
