At the beginning of Beyond, and in one trailer, when the Enterprise is under attack, we see Spock head to the turbo lift, and clearly flips his phaser from the "blue" setting (stun) to the "red" setting (kill). I know the ship was under attack, but hasn't it always been a sort of unofficial rule on Star Trek to attempt to stun an opponent first, before setting phasers to kill? Why go straight to the deadly setting?
