A Premiere/Finale DVD Set? Would it Sell?

Captain
Captain
Consider this (a 5 disc set) in the same vein as the Captain's Log DVD set:

Disc 1:
TOS "The Cage"/"Where No Man Has Gone Before"
TOS "Turnabout Intruder"

Disc 2:
TNG "Encounter at Farpoint"
TNG "All Good Things..."

Disc 3:
DS9 "Emissary"
DS9 "What You Leave Behind"

Disc 4:
VGR "Caretaker"
VGR "Endgame"

Disc 5:
ENT "Broken Bow"
ENT "These Are the Voyages..." (it's the show's finale, deal with it...)

And with it they could have Okuda text commentary for each episode stating the vast differences between the beginnings and ends. Maybe some featurettes on the legacy of each show? Or dare I say...? *AUDIO* Commentaries by cast or crew members?

How much would it rock/suck?

It would need to have audio commentaries on TOS, DS9 and TNG for me to get it. Here in the UK we had VHS releases of the pilots and finales. I have the Emissary/What You Leave Behind tape.

Are there really people buying those DVD sets? Why let someone else choose which episodes you can watch?

Good point. However not everyone wants to buy all the shows on DVD (me, on the other hand...). But these would be an intersting way to "test the waters" for Paramount and to attract less hardcore Trek fans.

I mean John deLancie doing commentaries for "EaF" and "AGT" would be a hoot and half!

This potential set would be a mixed bag to be sure: "All Good Things..." and "What You Leave Behind" in the same set with "Endgame" and "These Are the Voyages..." :wtf:

They actually did release a VHS Set with both TOS pilots, EaF, Emissary, and Caretaker that I have. So it's not like they haven't done this sort of thing before. Although I would deffinitely pick it up if it had worthwhile special features. Emphasis on worthwhile.

^^ Most likely, you'd get 'interactive menus' and 'scene select' as the special features!

Maybe if you included the Premiere "The Man Trap" to the TOS Pilots. Also throw in the spiritual ENT finale "Demons" & "Terra Prime" (afterall that was broadcast in the series' regular time, an hour before that TNG coda).

The set should also finally include the alternate version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before". with the odd camera shot cut from the broadcast version and Quinn Martin style ACT I, ACT II etc...

Making it a 6 disc set should cover all this and leave some space for some lengthy retrospective documentaries, the kind that each series deserve. The material from the Captain's Log set was such a waste, especially considering the effort made to track down the lead actors. The lack of episode clips (rotoscoped photographs *yawn*) to highlight what they were talking about didn't help either. I'd happily pay slighty more per set if they made featurettes that wouldn't look out of place on broadcast TV.

Assuming there aren't rights issues between the TV and Features dept of Paramount, I'd go for this boxset if it also contained Star Trek (JJA's new beginning), Star Trek VI (end of an era) and Nemesis (like it or not, it ended TNG).

Then this would be the set to own in late 2009.

It's a nice idea, but I think it would only work for the premieres. Going right from the premiere to the finale implies that the 3-7 seasons between the two don't matter at all.

I would have preferred that all of those episodes got commentaries on their first DVD releases.

I got the Borg set because it was very cheap (£12), and it had pretty much all the Borg episodes I would want to see. Handier than having to dig through seasonal sets.
