"A Not-So-Strange New World"

Admiral Archer

Captain
Captain
This is a fanfic I decided to put together for my little brother, who in my head canon fully fleshed out the Denebians from planet Deneb Kaitos V. This is dedicated to the years we spent as kids riding in the backseat of my Mom's Rav 4 in the early 2000's pretending it was a starship, that I was the captain and that he was my Denebian first officer, along with our homebrew lego starship models and away mission props. The story itself ends the way it does because we have both grown up, and he now lives very far away, so while I miss him, I actually sent him an e-mail with this story attached. While I'm unsure of how he will take it, I also wanted to share with you guys. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing...

“Captain’s Log, stardate 70880. The starship Allegheny has arrived in orbit around planet Deneb Kaitos V, homeworld of the Denebian race. For me, it feels like coming home, not the least because my first officer is of this world.”

Captain Victor Clark looked up. On the bridge viewscreen was a big blue planet, and only if you looked very hard could you tell it even had any land on it at all, though little greenish brown specks marked the location of islands on the surface. As Clark stood up, he turned to face his first officer, Colonel Orion, and said to him, “Welcome home, Colonel!” Orion nodded, with a grunt of acknowledgement that was characteristic of his gruff nature. “Well then,” said Clark, looking around at his bridge crew, “let’s prepare for landing. Blue Alert! All officers man diving stations.” Suddenly the massive starship Allegheny lurched forward, sinking into lower orbit of the planet. “Prepare for atmospheric entry,” said Clark calmly, while blue lights shone around on various panels on the bridge walls. As the ship entered the atmosphere, she shook lightly, but Clark merely said, “full power to deflector shields.” “Hull temperature at normal atmospheric levels,” reported Orion. The Allegheny plunged into the skies above Deneb V, and suddenly the sunlight poured through the circular window in the bridge ceiling, casting a glare on all the computer screens. “Steady,” ordered Clark, “All hands, standby to breach ocean surface. Helm, take us down!” The gigantic starship Allegheny slammed into the surface of the ocean, but all was well both inside and out. As the ship totally submerged, Orion exclaimed, “Look Captain! Whales!” Of course, on Deneb V, whales are almost three times as long as blue whales on Earth, and that’s at the smaller end of the size spectrum. The whales, however large, took little notice of the massive starship floating steadily to the ocean floor, though if anyone were standing at the massive windows in the forward ship’s lounge and looked out, they could see Denebian dolphins swimming just ahead of the ship’s huge bow. At last, the mighty starship Allegheny reached the underwater starbase it was headed for. “All hands, prepare for docking,” ordered Clark. ”Lock on umbilical supports.” And after a short rumbling sound, the ship’s momentum slowed, then stopped altogether, and after a few moments Orion reported, “Docking is complete.” “Stand down blue alert,” replied Clark. “All hands, prepare to disembark.” As the last of the crew left the bridge, Orion hung back. Clark went to him, smiling, and said, “Well, Colonel, are you going to stay aboard the sunken ship?” Orion looked somewhat nervously at his feet, then said, “This is it, Vic. I’m out.” Clark knew immediately what he meant. Silence fell for a few minutes, until Clark at last said sadly, “Well, we had a good run. It will just make leaving this time so much harder.” “I know,” replied Orion,”but I have a wife now, and maybe someday we can start a family. I want to rebuild, and I can’t do that on your ship, or any other. I have to settle down. I’m just too old for this sort of thing.” As Clark motioned for Orion to step onto the turbolift, Orion took one last look around the bridge, his gaze lingering at the tactical station he had manned when he first came on board as a young lieutenant commander fresh out of Starfleet Academy. Then, he turned, and stepped with Clark onto the turbolift.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
-The USS Allegheny is a Galaxy-class starship, named after the street we lived on when we were kids.
-Denebians resemble humans, only with gills in their ribs which allow them to breath underwater.
-Wealthy Denebian families share their surnames with constellations, hence the last name "Orion".
-Colonel Orion's rank is due to him being a Denebian officer who serves aboard a Starfleet ship.
