It's been a curious experiment going into a TV show that is so universally acclaimed, it renders community outreach unnecessary, as anyone who watchs it for even a flicker of an episode sees beyond cheesy "camp."

Disclaimer I should I add... I'm 16.

Let me add some context to that number, Season One, Episode One; Encounter at Farpoint, is about a lifetime removed from my birth.

And God Damn it is good.

Except for Wesley.

Glad that I got sick and had nothing better todo. Glad to be here.

Now if you will excuse me, I have 7 seasons of canon to catch up on. G'day

My Star Trek experience began, fully, when I was 8 in 1987, with the premiere of The Next Generation. It had been 21 years since the original series premiered.

Strange to think there's now more time between the present and TNG's premiere than there was between the premiere of TOS and TNG.

I wish I could experience it all for the first time again with a more mature perspective. I was 5 when it came out, and I'm sure most of it went way over my head. Lucky you, welcome to the world of TNG.

In a way, I kind of wish I could have the perspective of a child or teen regarding Trek. Fact is, I was 20 when TOS premiered so I have seen all of it through adult eyes and experiences. When I was 11, I read a Robert Heinlein book Have Spacesuit, Will Travel that I found in the Jr. High library. This was shortly after Sputnik went up and I was already an aviation/space junkie. I have read it again (no, I didn't steal the library copy) about very 10 years and the passing years and fatherhood have revealed continuing freshness with each review. For Alpha Zero, let's hope that Trek stands a similr test of time.

Welcome aboard! If you enjoy "Farpoint" so much (it doesn't have a great reputation amongst Trek fans, though I never got the out-and-out disdain for it), you're in for a real treat. While Seasons 1 and 2 are somewhat spotty, the show seriously improves with Season 3, generally considered on of the strongest seasons of any Trek show.

Maybe someday you'll see fit to go back even further and check out the show that started it all, but we won't lay that on you right now while you're getting into TNG....

I started with TNG when it was new, watching it as I fell asleep in my bedroom while I was in junior high and high school. I still think it's the best Star Trek series ever, and I've now seen every episode of every series, as well as all the movies (of course). I completely agree that it gets much better once you get to season 3. Just so you know, (because the writers don't in season one) there is, in fact, a difference between shields and navigational deflectors. Just saying...

Well, you're the right age. I was 17 in 1987 when TNG first premiered and loved it then, just as I still do now.

Have fun. Despite the occasional bad episode, it is largely a great show. You're in for on hell of a ride.
