When Zeppelin was first forming, Steve Marriott was auditioned as the lead singer. Imagine what a Marriott-fronted Zep would have sounded like.

Interesting thought, but I hadn't heard that story before.

As I recall from an old radio interview, Page had initially wanted Terry Reid, who declined but recommended Robert Plant instead. Since Plant subsequently brought along Bonzo from his old band, Zeppelin would have been a very different group with either Reid or Marriott, and probably would have been called something else altogether. (Perhaps it would have remained The New Yardbirds and lasted only a year or two before breaking up. Who knows?)
