Gene Roddenberry wanted Spock's catch phrase to be "Long Live and Prosper," apparently to make it sound more alien and esoteric. Maybe It was Leonard Nimoy who wasn't having it, and insisted on the more sensible sounding "Live Long."

Even as late as 1975, when Roddenberry appeared on The Mike Douglas Show he insisted that the phrase was "Long Live and Prosper." He got the whole studio audience to say it that way in unison.

Almost sounds Yiddish that way. :)

Also, it's a shame most of The Mike Douglas Show is gone. That was an excellent show.
