Paris slapped it on and switched the go button and he was off. Paris felt his feet leave the ground and adjusted the navigation device on his thruster pack to take him around the world in 30 minutes. He knew he could monitor his progress from the safety and monitor helmet that was all part of Starfleet Engineering's new mobile battle packs to help soldiers to escape battle situations in which the enemy outnumbered them. Something no doubt created along with many other inventions as a acceptance that war can happen anytime thanks to the still raw emotions of the Dominion War.
Paris speed was starting to go faster and faster. Things happening so quick he didn't even have time to look down and see his family or the other stable of engineers who had been sent out to the launch pad to begin the test on the first human subject.. Not counting those brave holograms who were used during the more problematic stages of testing where a many of packs were destroyed along with holo-emitters.
He was zoom, zoom, zooming through the sky. He could feel the cold wind rushing around his body and through the open spaces in his helmet. His body was shivering a little from said cold but the excitement made up for it all. The heart pounding the blood flowing and even a little bit of a erection and he felt alive like he hadn't felt since the time he went warp 10 then all of sudden everything went black!
He awoke to find himself oozing through water and mud. He tied to talk but found he couldn't speak and was compelled to feast on meat any kind of meat and felt that urge overcome him when he saw a couple of frogs and then was more surprised for his mouth, not a human mouth open up and snatch onto one of them and he began to chew and digest the creature. Not disgusted but still feeling shocked by it all. Then all of sudden he felt the cool tingle of a transporter beam cover him and when reassembled found himself on a Starfleet bio-bed.
The EMH who had also become his and his families personal doctor when they had returned stood over him scanning him with a tri-corder. He could see the Doc was talking or trying to talk to him but he had no ears or anything that one would call human ears so to Paris it was just confusing sound. He also saw B'Elanna crying in the room being comforted by a nurse and he wanted to reach out and touch her and let her know everything was okay but he had no arms. The Doc shot him with a hypo-spray and he drifted off to sleep.
For months the Doc studied and tested him and tried everything and Paris knew it was to try and cure him and B'Elanna would visit everyday but as the days past Tom began to feel uncomfortable in the surroundings. The urge to ooze through swampy and water and mud was something always at the fore thought of his mind. He began to even noticed memory lost. He didn't know his parents and barely remembered anything from the past 10 years but fragmented memories of B'Elanna and his daughter. Then one day it was all gone. No memory. Fear and the need to escape this place whatever this place was all he felt.
A couple of days had passed and Paris saw these strange beings were about to move him someplace. The swamp he hoped. His urges to return were strong and overwhelming. He had to get back. Then to his extreme happiness he realized that was were they had taken him. He could smell the musk and sense they possible prey nearby. He was let out of a strange contraption and he slitered across the mulk and mud and into the water and felt home at last. For a second, only a second he felt sad but he didn't know why but then he pressed on into the water further and was overjoyed with pleasure.
