A legend passes - RIP Barry Letts

Very sad news. I enjoyed his work on Doctor Who as well as his commentaries on the DVDs. Rest in peace, Barry. :(

Damn thats made me feel quite sad. Barry was one of the good ones.

You know, I thought he looked unwell during his last dvd appearance. He'd lost all his hair and was looking very gaunt. Did he have some form of cancer or something?

Anyway, RIP Barry you brought joy to many, many people (as well as scaring some of us shitless when we were kids). You will be sorely missed.

He really brought Dr. Who back from the brink and really structured the show, he was in the end a great producer. :(

I confess that I did not know who the gentleman was when I first read the story, but his prominence in Doctor Who lore piqued my interest. After researching a bit more, I felt he need to be honored, because he really was a vital part of the show's history.

His autobiography is coming out in November ("Who and Me") so fortunately he was able to get his stories down on paper before he passed away.

RIP

Alex

It's actually been out for a while, just not in print. Sadly that version only covered up to the end of season 8. The new one may be slightly expanded.

However he did record a number of DVD interviews for all the stories not yet covered.

Yeah, the just-announced Peladon box set will probably feature something about him. I'm also half-expecting to see a dedication in one of the upcoming specials like they did with Verity Lambert.

Are you sure you're thinking about the same book? According to Fantom Films (publishers of the November release), it's a brand new book making its hardback and paperback debut.

Extremely sad news! :( Of all the people involved in DW, he was at the top of my respect list! Hugely intelligent, talented, witty, etc.

I think his death pretty much leaves Terrance Dicks as the last of the "old guard", too. :(

Sorry I should have never been printed, rather than not in print. It was available to buy a few years back online, but not a physical book. The BBC bought out an audio version too.

I was at that last convention he attended (I attend as many Fantom events as I can) and he was genuinely moved when Terrance said their friendship was the best thing he had got out of their job.

Most of the 1st Doctor's directors are still around (and virtually none of Tom's!)

I'm glad Fantom is releasing a physical version. People keep saying e-books are so wonderful, but "real" books will still be around in 25 years to read and enjoy.

That includes Waris Hussein, the director of the very first story. I think he's still directing shows for American TV, too. He went on to direct some pretty big name shows for the US networks after leaving the BBC.

It is a shame so many of the behind-the-scenes people are no longer with us to tell their stories. I will say that considering it's been more than 45 years we should consider ourselves lucky that the (if you'll pardon the expression) attrition rate of the actors has actually been quite low. I mean, of the earliest casts we've only lost Jacqueline Hill and Adrienne Hill, plus Michael Craze from the Troughton era and Ian Marter. If you want an example of show for whom time has been just cruel, look at Bewitched, which began airing a year or two after Doctor Who. All the main cast are gone now expect for Dr. Bombay and the girl who played Tabatha. The Prisoner has also been hit hard (most notably the loss of Patrick McGoohan himself). We Whovians have had it lucky that so many veterans of the show (both behind the camera and in front) have continued to have been able to tell their stories.

RIP--Many of my favorite episodes of WHO were made during his reign (he was directly involved with my two all-time favorites: Inferno; The Daemons).
