A joint Klingon-Federation mission?

The only thing we know from TNG is that Worf was the only Klingon serving on a "Human Starfleet vessel" at the time of the first TNG season.

That leaves a lot of room for Worf not to be the first.

"The Sword of Kahless" establishes that Worf joining Starfleet was "Something no Klingon had ever done"

"Balance of Terror" established cloaking devices were a theoretical technology until 2266, but Enterprise ignored it. Discovery may take a similar loose approach to continuity.

I agree with guess it is the Vulcanian Expedition. Could be some type of contest between feds and klingons..

Why does a recurring Klingon captain mean working with the Federation? Can't the antagonist be a recurring Klingon captain?

I have a theory about Discovery. That a crew from the future will some how go back in time to 10 years before TOS. Either they are lost in time or have a mission. This way the Klingons and Human will work together.
