A fan-restored ending to "The Golden Compass"

It's a bit rough, which is inevitable given the available material, but still pretty moving, imo. The last shot is simply beautiful, and the replaced outro song fits far better than the "Lyra" song did.

Heck, just seeing Daniel Craig go all monster at the beginning is vital. Someday, I hope, we'll get a proper Compass Director's Cut. Until then, a proper TGC viewing will necessitate flipping the Bolvangar/Svalbard sequences on the dvd and then watching this:

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing this. I had seen the footage from the first half of the video, but none of the clips (other than what was seen in the trailer) of Lyra at the bridge (as it's called in the book). Those bits were absolutely stunning.

The one thing I didn't like about this video was that the notes went by way too fast to read. I'm going to have to go back and rewatch the video so I can pause it to read the notes.

I really hope they properly restore the ending for this film on the DVD (in the film and not as an extra), especially considering the sequels probably won't be made. That was my biggest complaint about The Golden Compass (although I had other issues). The mushy, happy ending with the cheesy, forced narration from Lyra was absolutely horrible.

It may not have been enough to "save" the film at the box office, but leaving in that MAJOR PLOT POINT would, I think, have made for a better and more compelling film.

What I don't understand is why they tried to give The Golden Compass a LOTRish type ending. IT'S NOT LOTR!

^ Maybe not, but that's what they wanted it to be. They were hoping to create the next big fantasy film franchise.

I haven't seen the movie or read any of the books, so I can't really comment on the situation.

I posted a link to that before but it was buried deep in some thread.

It's too bad the movie wasn't more successful because I would have loved to see how they would handle the other two books because they go in such a different direction than the first one. I certainly wasn't expecting the left-hand turn the plot took from the rather traditional opening.

I too would like to see a "fixed" version of the movie. I don't really expect one to be forthcoming though.

We got fan-edits of other movies, if the scene is in the deleted scenes on (a) DVD, we might get a fan-edit with the ending.

Aye, that's the operative "if".

I actually like Lyra's "let 'em try to stop us!" line - it definitely fits her character. Still, the ending should have been kept in.
