A Dr. Smith vibe?

When I watched the five minute sneak peek, I couldn't help but note how Robert Carlyle's character seemed to have an ulterior motive for opening the gate like he did.

If this series is basically Lost In Space, I wonder if he'll wind up being the "Dr. Smith" of the group. And I'm not trying to be snarky here--although feel free to take whatever humor you want from this.

I'm just wondering if Carlyle's character is supposed to be an antagonist, a potential enemy, within the group--much like Dr. Smith was, but without the over the top camp. If anybody can play this sort of thing to perfection, it'll be Carlyle.

Now that would be an interesting angle. We've always assumed that the main characters are squeaky clean.

I also read an article that implied that Eli is the point-of-view character and therefore the defacto main character. That would also be new. Anything that sounds like not a tired retread makes me hopeful, but the (usually reliable) futoncritic is throwing cold water on that hope.

It's a shame to see that the writers are already falling back on tired and true storytelling (at least according to that review). I'm hoping that the "big change" the SGU team kept bragging about wasn't limited only to the camera work.

But before I draw any final conclusions, I'm still willing to give this a shot when it airs.
