A collection of original Star Trek matte paintings

I've scoured the various memorabilia auction houses for listings of the various Star Trek matte paintings that have been up for sale over the years, and collected them into this album.

The images are mostly the highest resolution you'll be able to find these mattes, though since its the raw painting they obviously have the matte black spots for the production crew to splice in the film! But personally I think it's a really cool detail. Often the paintings were framed to cut off the edges, so you'll see quite a bit more of the painting in these.

Most of these were painted by Syd Dutton.

I'd recommend reading Ex Astris Scientia's Re-Used Planet Sets for some cool details on when these mattes were used.

Aren’t there some computer programs out there that can surmise 3D structures from 2d images?

Might be something to try…
