A Christmas Carol

Rated: PG for scary sequences and images.
Trekker's Grade: A

-------------------------------------

A Christmas Carol is a timeless classic that is enjoyed and loved by millions, it's one of Charles Dickens's masterpieces meant to boost the spirits and enlighten the soul.

It has many versions, including a well-done cartoon Disney version, and story is fairly well known. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly businessman who seven years earlier lost his partner. On Christmas Eve he's visited by the ghost of his partner who warns Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits intent to show Scrooge his ways. The three ghosts, of course, are The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

Jim Carrey plays the role of Scrooge and three ghosts and he does them all wonderfuly. The 3D in the movie is well done, though there's one needless extended sequence that seems there only to boast about the 3D, and doesn't have what I call the "Colorform effect" that 3D movies I've seen in the past have. (The only problem I had with the 3D is that the glasses didn't full cover my field of vision so I was too often aware of the glasses and their frame.)

It's a bit early -for me- for this level of Christmas spirit and cheer -also hindered by the 70-some degree day we had today- but this movie delivers the spirit(s) well in one of the better adaptions of Dickens's masterpiece.

Go see this with your family, some of the ghost sequences (notably the door-knocker, the ghost of Jacob Marley and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come) may be a bit scary for younger kids but overall they'll likely enjoy it.

I just got out of the theatre and aside from knowing the story already, this movie was excellent. I'm 30 years old and this was my first 3-D experiance. I'm not sure , but at the end it looked like Zemeckis gave the older audiance a wink to BTTF( Marty riding behind the jeep on his skateboard) I don't know if it was on purpose or not. I recomend this movie to everyone, unless ofcourse you are a humbug;)

I prefer to retain my memory of the live one-man Patrick Stewart version. :)

Still, if this is one of those rare movies where Carrey isn't extremely obnoxious, more power to it.

Every year in December I make it a point to watch all of the different version of A Christmas Carol so I'll probably see this version even though I don't like Jim Carrey. My ranking of the adaptations:

1. 1951 version with Alistair Sim
2. 1984 version with George C. Scott
3. 1935 version with Seymour Hicks
4. 1999 version starring Patrick Stewart
5. 1970 musical version starring Albert Finney
6. 1938 version starring Reginald Owen

The Mickey and Muppet versions are actually my favorites, I guess because those are the ones I grew up on. I think that the Christmas Carol story is best done as a comedy or as a children's program. The ones that try to take the story too seriously just don't fit that well to me.

I look forward to seeing this version. As I mentioned in another thread I saw the 3D trailer while seeing Toy Story in 3D and it looked really great. I do wish it had opened a little later though because I like to reserve my Christmas movies for after Thanksgiving.

So can anybody tell me if Jim Carrey manages to...well, not be Jim Carrey? I really dislike him as an actor, but perhaps if I can't see his face...

Because like some of you, I watch several versions of A Christmas Carol every year - all of the ones mentioned by Dark Journey are wonderful, in their own ways, but I also really love the Muppets version - so I would kind of like to see this new one. But not if I'm confronted with a Jim Carrey-like Jim Carrey, if you know what I mean.

I'm going in a couple of weeks to see a Klingon Christmas Carol.

This was the least Carrey-like Carrey that I have seen. Like you, I'm no Carrey fan. I don't think you'll be put off by his work here.

I enjoyed the movie - the 3D was very nicely done - I just wish that the character design for the Cratchett family wasn't quite so...creepy. The voicework was great, but I found them difficult to look at on the screen.

He's fairly non-Carrey like. There's... "moments" of it but if on a "Like Jim Carrey" scale Ace Ventura is a "10" and, oh, "Eternal Sunshine" is a "1", I'd say this movie is around a 2 or 3.

Thanks, Trekker and Mistral. You have given me hope, something I never expected to get in reference to a Jim Carrey movie.

Why don't you just wait until after Thanksgiving to see it?
