A Captain's Name

Hi, I am currently writing a new little series of Star Trek away from the others (to a point obviously) on a new class ship, Athena Class, called the Union.

I am looking for a Captain's name and am finding it difficult to find one that I really like.

The captain is a young female (about Kirk's age when he became Captain for the first time) strong and independant but caring.

So far I have had Karan Tayce and currently I have Toni (Antoinette) Larrson but it still doesn't feel right. :vulcan:

Any suggestions?

Karan Tayce is wfully close to Kara Thrace of BSG, so it sounds like a spoof. Avoid it.

Beyond that, it would be useful if you could provide her nationality/ethnicity, to find an appriate name.

I use http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ when looking for names, they have a ones from all across the globe, so I'm sure you can find something there that would suit.

Or if you want some random names thrown at you :):
Amelia Chase
Briony Munro
Cassandra Stillwell
Donna McMillan
Emily Carter
Francesca Donnelly
Georgina Kane
Heather Ross
Ingrid Grady
Janine Powell
Karen Hannigan
Lana St. John
Meredith Keller
Noelle Deveraux
Odette Coleman
Paula Jennings
Quinn Murphy
Rachael Williams
Serenity Kincaid
Tessa Johns
Ursula Myers
Veronica DePaul
Wilhelmina O'Shea
Xanthe Lomax
Yolanda Allenby
Zelda Silver

Gosh, there are loads of possible combos. And White and American can still mean an ethnicity. She could be Greek, or Swedish or Jewish or French. I tend to try to think of faces and let names come to me. Some names have evolved over time, or the faces have, and suddenly a character is lighter or older or whatever than I had originally thought.

I think it depends on the qualities you want your captain to encompass. Come up with a list of five or so traits your captain has, then look at the meanings of names. See if any stand out to you.

Also, I like this site for more unusual names:

Loads of names from all over the world, broken down into continent, region and country. Hope this gives you some ideas! :)

There are some nice names on that list, but I wouldn’t call her Lana St. John. Sounds too much like a character in a comic book or a romance novel.

And for some reason, Paula Jennings and Quinn Murphy make me think of TV news anchors.

I quite like the name Amelia Chase, Master Sinclair. Sounds like she'd be a cool captain...or even a hot one.
Why thank you. It does sound quite a "captainy" name.

That would be interesting, a Trek romance series. Captain Lana St. John could be enthralled with Chief Engineer Darius Drake's "throbbing warp core"

Would make for some well presented Captain's logs, in a summing up and concise manner.

I think the other posters have given you some good ideas. I would throw in my own suggestion.

One place you might want to look is at maybe famous scientists, astronauts, or aviators. If I remember correctly, I think Picard was named after an explorer and Janeway after an activist. Perhaps you could find someone that embodies the qualities you want out of your captain and name her as an homage.

It took me forever to come up with the name Terrence Glover, my captain in the Dark Territory series, so I know how much of a pain it is. To be honest I can't say I exactly followed the formula I recommended to you. However, his first name came from an African Roman poet and the last name from actors Danny Glover and John Glover.

Another suggestion is perhaps naming her for someone you admire/respect.

The smallest problem with the family name of Chase is that it supposedly is part of James T. Kirk's family lineage, from a older proposal for a possible Romulan War movie and also in some fan fictions that I've read.

Nothing wrong with being related to Kirk, if that's the way you want to go.

:)

Chase was also the name of the captain in the aborted animated Final Frontier series. Alexander Chase was the name I believe. It's a good last name though.

I have gone for Chase but I am not keen on Amelia - trying to find a first name that suits Chase and has some power behind it.

help :P

That's cool. Would one of the other names suit?

There are loads of naming sites out there for you to find something that might fit.

I vote for "Cassandra Stillwell" of the Athena-Class 'U.S.S. Union'. *nods a lot.* What era of Trek is this being set-up in? How big is the Athena-Class? Somewhere around the same size as the Norway-Class, or the Galaxy-Class?
