Could be 'catastrophe,' official says... Um you think? :wtf:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/12/haiti.earthquake/index.html

(CNN) -- A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and inflicting a catastrophe on the impoverished Caribbean nation, its ambassador to the United States said.
"The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best," the ambassador, Raymond Joseph, told CNN.
The magnitude 7.0 quake struck about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince shortly before 5 p.m. Joseph said he had little information about the extent of damage from the quake, but one government official -- the only one he was able to reach -- told him houses had crumbled "on the right side of the street and the left side of the street."
"He said it is a catastrophe of major proportions," Joseph said.

:(

A hospital has collapsed and many roads are blocked, but there are no reports of injuries yet. That will probably change. There's also a tsunami watch there and on nearby islands, but that doesn't seem to be a significant danger.

I hope it's not as bad as it sounds. :(

With 5.9 and 5.5 aftershocks, I'd be surprised if Port-au-Prince isn't 80% leveled

According to CNN, it's the largest quake in 200+ years in Haiti. :(

Hundreds are probably dead. The pictures coming in are terrible. :(

The Presidental Palace has collapsed, as well as many government buildings...it looks VERY bad...

The Brazilian military is the command source for the UN Peacekeeping mission there.. I'm sure there will be a worldwide response, but will that response FIX Haiti? I'm not sure

This is sad, especially for a country already hit hard by poverty. A few days ago there was also an earthquake in Northern California, though thankfully no one was hurt.

Looks like it's even worse than it seemed. Aid will start coming in today. There were already a lot of supplies there from ongoing humanitarian efforts, but they may have been buried or destroyed in the quakes.

Port-au-Prince is virtually destroyed, judging by the photos I've seen at CNN. I can believe the people who are saying there could be 100,000+ dead.

The country has no building standards, adding to the tragedy. The quake was indeed powerful, but the lack of strength in the infrastructure was a terror waiting to happen. Some are describing it as "worse than a war zone."

Here is a list of where people can help

Thanks for the link- I was just about to look up where I could send a donation.

That's gotta be an awful mess down there. They were still trying to recover from the flooding that hit the country a while back and now they have to deal with this.

CNN has a list too. And of course even if you can't give a lot, you can follow the directions in my sig!

Bloody hell. A hundred thousand possibly dead. And disease and injury will add to that, with the hospitals destroyed and many caregivers killed or injured. :(

I just sent a hundred bucks to Save The Children, which is an excellent organization that I've been involved with since about 1980. Hopefully all these groups and countries will get in there quickly and deliver some effective relief.

I wonder if people even grasp the enormity of this tragedy, especially in contrast to something like Hurricane Katrina. I'm just hoping there isn't extensive infection following this, and that they find a way to at least get basic care to everyone quickly. Please help if you can, people.

I read a news blurb on my phone this afternoon that said that an aerial survey was conducted this afternoon and reported that between 75% and 85% of the city was destroyed, and that the main port is a mess to the point that deep draft ships can't gain access.
