50 Years of Trek

Just wondering if there is a possibility Paramount and Abrams have things mapped out for the next couple of years. Maybe we don't see trek on TV again for a long while. We get a movie this year.....then another if it is even mildly successful, and then again when the 50th anniversery comes around. Just wondering if that might be a long term plan.....

All I know is that I was disappointed when the 40th anniversary passed with nary a whimper. I saw all sorts of stuff at 30 years, when I was too young to really pay attention. I guess that's what happens when there's no Trek on TV.

50 years is a huge landmark, whether or not the franchise continues on a losing streak with the JJA film. At the very least, Paramount will celebrate and broadcast a gathering of Trek alumni or do some sort of documentary. Even the dire 40th Anniversary Christies' auction broadcast and How William Shatner Changed the World counts as that. I would've wanted Enterprise to be beginning its sixth season around then, with a Shatner guest role but what can you do?

Personally I hope they pull out all the stops and give fans something that spans all six casts. A mini-series or TV movie crossing three centuries, even if the budget only stretches to animation.

I was sooo disappointed with the 40th anniversary. It barely registered a whimper at all. I remember during the 30th anniversary, Trek was huge news. DS9 and VOY were doing anniversary shows, FC was coming out at the end of the year. TV was always running Trek specials and celebrations.

What the hell happened?

I really hope they make up for the lacklustre 40th anniversary with an all-out 50th.

I doubt it seriously... The market will speak on this film, and that will determine the future of Trek.

And not just the film. The new group of Trek Fans are going to have to buy the toys and books and what ever comes along looking for "The Coin of the Realm".

People like me who watched the TOS premier on TV are simply Treked Out.

Yep. The reason there was a lot of fooferall at thirty years and none at forty was because the Franchise was alive and vital, if slipping, at thirty years and dead at forty. If Paramount is making big money on the show at fifty years, then they'll be more than happy to sell millions of "golden anniversary" geegaws.
