24th Century Fashion

Lame.

No seriously, I can't get my head around people in the 24th century wearing pyjamas and vaguely medieval peasant clothing.

Yeah, all that wrap-around stuff. Looked comfortable.

I like that in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Kirk wore jeans and a flannel shirt. It's possible some things may never go out of fashion. (That's more for the jeans than the shirt!)

That's because the wardrobe departments are stuck in the 1950s as regards what people will wear in the future. The first glaring exception was of course Star Trek where dressing the crew in 1960s styles inadvertently made them sci fi style icons, rarely attempted again except films like The Fifth Element where Luc Besson got Jean Paul Gaultier to do the wardrobe and Blade Runner, where the women all dressed as though they were going to Ascot Ladies Day.

It seems that the vest is a big fashion item for men in the 24th century. It would be interesting if we saw humans on Earth in the more tropical climate as we generally only see what people are wearing up in the northern hemisphere.

Yes! Absolutely! I do indeed concur! Whole-heartedly!

24 th Century is definitely the century that style forgot. Except for the Cardassians, they are the only people who seem to have any. And then, not all the time.

Forget the Borg and the Dominion, the greatest threat to the Alpha Quadrant were Wesley and Jake Sisko's sweaters!

Style is pretty much dead in the U.S. - go into any shopping mall, Starbucks or movie theater (you know, places people congregate en masse) and you'll see. Nothing but athletic gear and similar floppy cheap knit stuff. Oh, and omnipresent denim.

Yeah, I felt sorry for those two having to wear those ridiculous multicoloured abominations. This is supposed to be what is considered "hip" among young people in the future? :guffaw:And every time I watch Wrath of Khan I cringe at David's so '80s cardigan with the sleeves around his neck. It makes me want to smack him. I thought the vaguely futuristic civilian wear in First Contact was a little better. Nothing incredibly creative, but at least nothing embarassing, either.

Am I the only one who wishes people still wore fedoras, and not ironically?

No! And I'd like to be able to wear a hat some place besides Easter service without looking like I'm wearing a costume. Alas!

The thing I notice about fashion on TNG is how BORING most of it is. I mean, you see the occasional high spot, and right off hand I'd say Tasha's hot little number definitely counts, and then you see some stuff that misses but demonstrates that somebody was at least trying something a bit different, but mostly it was all so dreary and utilitarian. And the colors were so dull, too - lots and lots of earth tones.

If I remember that episode correctly, under the influence of the Psychic Threat of the Week, Tasha actually goes to Deanna's quarters to borrow clothes, saying something like "You always wear such wonderful things off duty." (Hey, I'm a girl. I notice this stuff.) It was never specifically stated that that barely-there black outfit came from Deanna, but I remember thinking the second time I saw that episode - after I knew how bland even Deanna's off-duty wardrobe tended to be, at least the portions of it that I got to witness - "Where - where - does Deanna wear all this cool stuff and why don't I get to see any of it?"

I like the blandness. They are not concerned about looks, fashion, money, and other nonsense. They are there to learn and improve themselves. It's what Trek is all about.

^ So having fun with ones clothes is just too frivolous for the 24th century but going to the holodeck to be Sherlock Holmes or a hard-boiled detective isn't? Getting dressed for the part, too? Right.

Well, all I can say is, if I didn't have to worry about money, I'd sure the heck have fun with my clothes. I do now, and I do have to worry about money.

Besides, even the clothes that weren't supposed to be bland were bland. I remember Beverly dressing up in a short cocktail-type dress (or whatever you'd call it in the 24th century) one time for an intimate dinner with Jean Luc, and it had a short flirty skirt and...and it was the color of dirt. And I remember that episode in which the entire crew loses its memory and Ro and Riker, since they've forgotten how much they annoy each other, discover that they have kind of a thing for each other, and Ro plants herself in Riker's bed, if I remember correctly, wearing a long gown that's - you guessed it - the color of dirt.

Of course both Beverly and Ro didn't look bad in the dirt-tan color, because it would take more than that to make either of them actually unattractive, but it was most certainly not the ideal color for either of them, nor anybody else that I can think of.

I strongly suspect that dirt-tan will never be a romantic color, even in the 24th century. My theory at the time the episodes originally aired was that somebody in wardrobe got a bunch of dirt-colored fabric on sale somewhere.

may be colorful uniforms are a taboo, like pink on guys is today? May be they think colors dont look humble and make you look like a clown or a child.

Amen about Cardassian style! :D

Except for the uniform disaster in "The Wounded," and what Kovat and Enabran Tain wore (though I think Tain did it on purpose), the Cardassians were excellent dressers!

You'd NEVER see a Cardassian in one of those stupid unitard suits or whatever the crap those were. No way. Just...NO.

I'd agree that a lot of it was bland, but I'd imagine hard to come up with some really great stuff with time restraints and budget. I'd love to see a more stylized approach like the mentioned Fifth Element and give the future a more vibrant look.

Saying that, I didn't mind some of Jake Sisko's gear, one of two of the shirt and vest combo's suited him - as did some of Benjamin's clothing (the one set that stands out in my mind is what he wore early on in Way of the Warrior).

When the costume department decided to make an effort with an alien culture, they regularly went for a clown look; eg the Ferengi and Neelix.

I seem to remember the Kazon were a bit funky but that could just be my memory playing tricks.

pink on guys is coming back. at least in the UK. i won't be seen dead in it, but i see people on TV and around town wearing pink shirts or sweaters.

oh, sorry. it's not pink it's 'slamon'. or something.
