2016 induction finalists announced for the World Video Game Hall of Fame

The Strong National Museum of Play has announced 2016's 15 finalists for induction into the World Video Game Hall of Fame:

Grand Theft Auto III
John Madden Football
The Legend of Zelda
Minecraft
Nürburgring
The Oregon Trail
Pokémon Red and Green
Sid Meier’s Civilization
The Sims
Sonic the Hedgehog
Space Invaders
Street Fighter II
Tomb Raider

You can vote for your favorite 2016 finalist here, and you can nominate a game for next year here.

The inaugural inductees from last year were DOOM, Pac-Man, Pong, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and World of Warcraft.

This year's winners have been announced and they are:

Grand Theft Auto III
The Legend of Zelda
The Oregon Trail
The Sims
Sonic the Hedgehog
Space Invaders

Not a whole lot of surprise there (maybe GTA III - I've never played any of those, so I can't speak as to if any of them deserve or don't deserve a spot). Most of the finalists from this year will probably make it in the next couple years since they are pretty obvious selections (especially Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and Minecraft). In fact, 5 of the winners (all but GTA III) were also nominated last year and didn't make it.
