2010-11 sf/f trend: superpowers!

I was expecting an alien invasion flood for 2010-11, but it looks like - Heroes' nose dive notwithstanding - the big trend this coming season will be superpowers.

Michael Chiklis is the dad of a superpowered family - here's hoping the rest of the casting is as inspired.

NO ORDINARY FAMILY (ABC) - a typical American family gains special abilities after their plane crash lands into the Amazon River. Chiklis will play Jim Powell, the clan's patriarch who acquires super strength.

HAVEN (SYFY) Stephen King inspired tale of supernaturally-powered townsfolk.

THE CAPE (NBC)- a light drama with a comic book sensibility, The Cape is set in a fictionalized version of Los Angeles and centers on a former cop framed for a crime who becomes the Cape, a masked hero, to clear his name and reunite with his son. Most likely intended to pair up with Chuck.

So, basically, a bunch of guys watched Heroes go down the toilet and thought they could do better ?

Well, at least its better than vampires!
Eh, I'd probably prefer vampires to this. I think there's been a trifle much of superheroics as of late, but the same could be said of vampires. They both feel very played out and I wasn't keen on either to start with.

I don't know if getting Chiklis to play a guy with super-strength is inspired exactly.

It's good seeing him cast but having the super-strength thing, yeah, snore.

Got another one, in the supernatural-villagers mode: The Gates.

You want vampires, we got vampires!

Written by Richard Hatem and Grant Scharbo, "Gates" centers on a big-city cop (Grillo) who becomes chief of police in a seemingly sleepy planned community only to discover there's much more to the residents than meets the eye.

Mably ("The Prince and Me") will play one of the residents, a cardiologist who is a vampirelike creature. Gavankar ("The L Word") will play a local cop with a dark secret. West ("90210") will play the owner of a tea shop.

There's been Misfits here in the UK and rumours of a Superpowered series for the Saturday night Doctor Who/Merlin timeslot... I assume to replace Robin Hood.
