1. Transformers 2: yeah yeah everybody hates it, but it was gorgeous fun
2. Terminator Salvation: again, amazing action scenes
3. Star Trek: so much better than I thought it would be
4. District 9: a pleasant surprise
5. Avatar: I might rank this higher if it was a mite shorter...
6. Land of the Lost: another reviled movie I thought was hilarious and great action
7. Watchmen: it's hard to rank this. It's a faithful adapation of my all time fav comic but the movie itself is a little slow and static and cold...
8. UP
9. Sherlock Holmes: much better than I expected
10. GI Joe: good stoopid fun

Not sure if I can get a top ten but I'll try:

1. Star Trek

Loved this movie. Loved the cast, and other than the Lens Flare, it was just really really well done.

2. Taken

I'm wondering if many people are forgetting about this film, but this was one of the better pics I saw this year. Loved those unique set of skills. ;)

3. Avatar

Beautifully shot, but the Story could have used some fine tuning.

4. Up

Another great from the folks at Pixar

5. Zombieland

I probably should have hated it, but didn't.

6. The Hangover

See Zombieland

7. Up in the Air

I love George Clooney, even though I wonder why I didn't like Mychael Clayton.

8. Sherlock Holmes

Pacing felt off, but still a fun film

9. Inglorious Bastards

Very unique film. Waltz deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting role

10. Sunshine Cleaning

Another quiet but good film.

I have only kept a list of the movies I saw at the cinema not any that I saw on DVD. A couplr of these movies may not have been released in 2009, they might have just taken to 2009 to reach cinemas here.

I did see "Land of the Lost" on VD. It cost me $2 to hire, and it was a complete waste of that $2. I couldn't even watch to the end, it was that bad. Thanks heavens, I didn't pay to see it at the cinema.

Modest year in the cinema in terms of numbers, but there are a few more released this year that I'm planning to see next year, and the films I saw were generally of good quality.

1. Inglourious Basterds [A+]

2. Up [A+]

3. Star Trek [A]

4. Sherlock Holmes [A-]

5. Up in the Air [A-]

6. The Princess and the Frog [A-]

7. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [B+]

8. Watchmen [B+]

9. (500) Days of Summer [B+]

10. An Education [B+]

11. The Time Traveler's Wife

12. Public Enemies [B-]

13. X-Men Origins: Wolverine [C]

The last one was the only real disappointment of the year, though by the time I saw it my expectations weren't especially high.

Top 10 is fluid:
Star Trek - Surprisingly refreshing with great acting, humor, and story. Stayed true to Star Trek. Only draw back is a very thin villain but that is overlooked at how well they rebooted the franchise.

District 9 - Great science fiction film that also has a gritty realistic feel. Violent, almost video game violent but still, it was a good film.

Night at the Museum 2 - Not as great as the first but still a good family film. Hank Azaria is always a great add to any film.

Angels and Demons - I don't care what anyone thinks. I like this film a lot. Tom Hanks is a good actor.

Up - Not as great as other Pixar but that's saying 50 dollars isn't as good as 100. They still deliver a great film.

Sherlock Holmes - I liked it. Fun, engaging characters, a bit of wit and charm thrown in.

Zombieland - Funny, funny film that is also very short. But still it paces well.

The Hangover - I liked it. I think the twist at the end was well done as well.

Watchman - Translation was great. I know it wasn't popular but it was fun.

9 - Short film, engaging with very a direct storyline. Thin story but very good acting from animation.

Bottom 5:
Avatar - For a film hyped as the next great film, this fell flat. Characters were cardboard thin, story was overly preachy and rehashed multiple times with no twists whatsoever, and the acting was wooden. Villains made this worse as they were like Star Trek but worse. Very thin.

GI Joe - Not as bad as Transformers but still, pretty bad. I think the best way to sum this up is what I heard. Wayan's tried to ruin this film but somehow didn't. It was still pretty bad.

Transformers 2 - Wow, who knew they could crush this proud franchise even further? Michael Bay found a way. Avatar with shiny robots.

Men Who Stare at Goats - What the hell was that? I have no idea what this is about? But it gives the message, being on LSD makes it a better film.

Ice Age 3 - This franchise gets worse and worse unfortunately. 2nd one wasn't bad but this one was.
