In this day and age of global warming and other environmental crises, a story about one mans insane attempt to do something about it may be entertaining.

I wouldn't think a faithful adaption would work though. Make it about the CEO of Greenpeace wigging out and taking maters into his own hands and you got a winner.

The deepest part of the ocean is less than 20 thousand leagues under the surface.

...but only by about 19997.2 leagues!

It's not about the depth, It's 20.000 leagues (distance traveled)under the sea.

Btw, "20 thousand leagues" under the sea refers to the distance the ship has traveled underwater, not depth it's capable of attaining. 20 thousand leagues equals about 12 times the radius of the earth.
