1990's Dark Shadows on Hulu

Zachary Smith

I just finished watching the entire run of the series a while back and I'm angry ALL OVER AGAIN that this terrific show got canceled. It was VERY well done with a tremendous cast and generally great production values (the miniature of "Collinwood" notwithstanding).

It was a great show with a lot of promise and deserved another season.

What do you think?

Joanna Goings was yummy in that, if I remember right didn't the first Gulf War begin like a couple days after the series premiere? I remember it getting pre-empted or bumped around as NBC was doing prime-time coverage of the war. Was the first time news organizations had that kind of real-time access to a war and it was giving them a lot of footage and ground (or Hotel) reports as it were.

Got it on DVD, and yes, sucks it was cancelled when it was (though at least it got somewhat of an "end"). But it was FAR better than the original, IMO.

LOVED the 90's version - amazing cast. So sad it was canceled way too soon. :(

I loved the 90's version and was upset when it got cancelled. I felt a trifle disloyal to the original, which I also loved, when I realized that almost all of the new cast was far superior to the original. Ben Cross was wonderful in the part.

I just couldn't like the new Angelique, though. Granted, she was probably more 'realistic' than Lara Parker was, but Lara's interpretation allowed one to be more sympathetic than the new one (whose name escapes me ATM).

This was also one of my first subscriptions on Hulu and yes, It did make me mad all over again that the series was cancelled. When re-watching the series, I was surprised to see how quickly and with little hesitation they would kill off cast members. I suppose in a Gothic Horror Soap Opera death is more like a revolving door than a one-way trip or, perhaps they knew that the series didn't have much shelf life to begin with. Either way I wish it had continued a bit longer.

I agree, but mainly because I was 13 when I saw Lara Parker for the first time, and she's burned into my memory forever.

Oh, and - Joanna Going in the 1990 version? Also

I saw her at Comic-Con a few years ago and she's still lovely. She obliged us with an 'Angelique laugh'. :techman: Kathryn Leigh Scott is also still lovely.

Indeed, it was shame it never got a chance, although THE VAMPIRE DIARIES certainly feels like the second (third?) coming of DARK SHADOWS.

I'll be curious to see who they cast as Angelique in the Tim Burton version. Lara Parker is a tough act to follow . . . .

I like the Original best, but this was a dang good nighttime update that yes was canceled too soon. Imperfect in some spots, sure, but never given a chance either. I found the dvd set very cheap used and I was glad to see it again on Hulu. Now! If Johnny Depp would ever settle down and make a movie version or give it to someone less busy who has the time and care to do a DS film properly!

I also just got some of the classic DVDs for Christmas. I got the new 'Curse of the Vampire' Barnabas storyline completation from my mom and the Season Set 11 from my husband. He said to me, 'You know there's the first 10 and something called 'the beginning', right?' I said, 'Yes, but this is when Quentin shows up!'

Oh! I did review the 1991 series awhile back, along with a couple other DS highlight sets

Lisette Anthony. It just came to me.
Yes, she seemed a bit waifish compared to Lara Parker's classic 1960s sexpottishness. But I loved the very clever shot in the '90 version when Angelique suddenly looms up batween a pair of rooftop gargoyles.

Although my girlfriend and I still make fun of Joanna Going's faux French accent in the historical flashback scenes.

"Barneebus! You are fwee!"
