150 dead after earthquake in Italy

I didn't see a thread on this yet. There was an Earthquake in L'Aquilia, Italy. My heart goes out to the families of those who died :(

Story

Rescuers worked into the early morning hours Tuesday in hopes of finding survivors of a powerful earthquake that ripped through Italy's mountainous Abruzzo region, killing scores of people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

Tearful survivors, many of them clad in pajamas and blankets, watched as bodies were pulled from the rubble in the medieval city of L'Aquila, about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Rome. The quake killed more than 150 people, L'Aquila's fire department said late Monday.

It's getting worse. :( At least 179 are known dead and 1500 injured. The hospital had to be evacuated. It sounds like the city has been practically destroyed.

Hopefully, the rescuers will be able to save whoever might still be trapped.

I was watching this on the news as it first broke yesterday morning. Terrible situation. :( I hope none of our Italian members have family in the region that were affected by this.

An aftershock just struck, measured at 5.6 on the Richter scale... That's big. The basilica in L'Aquila just collapsed. I don't even want to think about the loss of life...:(

Very sad news. I hope something substantial can be done to salvage those people's lives... in terms of jobs, homes and general quality of life, after the immediate crisis. :(

Me, I'm still saddened at the effect of the quake and its aftershock.

Yes, but let's not forget those who have died in other quakes in the last 3 months alone. There's already been 6 big ones this year around the world.

I think we should prepare for many more to come, if we've had 6 already in 3 months and there's 9 months left to go this year then we'd better be prepared for the worst.

Edit: A quake struck just yesterday off the coast of Russia measuring 7.0 on the richter scale. Luckily nobody was hurt and there was no tsunami.
Here, it's easier if I just post this.

There hasn't been particularly more earthquakes this year. On average, a magnitude 7+ quake occurs about once a month, and a magnitude 6 or greater quake once every three days. It's always tragic when one of those larger earthquakes happens in a populated area and people suffer as a result.

I do have to wonder about the building codes there. Granted Italy has to deal with a lot more historical buildings, but if an earthquake of this size occurred in California or Japan there wouldn't be this many casualties. For example, the Northridge earthquake had peak ground accelerations about 3-5 times as strong in a much denser area with much fewer deaths. It's still possible to do seismic retrofits on the historical buildings and old apartments, and I would have thought it would be a priority given that Italy is a known area of high seismic hazard.

Tachyon Shield, not here. You've got your own thread.

I made one post yesterday mentioning Nibiru and that's it, the rest is relevant to the thread and I was already told "not here" so your post wasn't required especially an entire day later. By posting that post you've just backed the thread up again to yesterday and pointed out something already done and dusted. You shouldn't have posted that post.

Let's get back on topic shall we.

Could this guy be more of an idiot ?

But Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi appeared to brush aside the dire conditions facing survivors during a visit to one of the camps.

"They have everything they need, they have medical care, hot food...," he said in an interview with a German television station.

"Of course, their current lodgings are a bit temporary. But they should see it like a weekend of camping."

Thanks to everybody for the kind thoughts.

Luckily, I don't know anyone in that zone of Italy, but pictures and witnesses' reports from the news are enough to shake me. Government sources talk now about 260 death, 1.000 injured and about 30.000 refugees. The city of L'Aquila is in bad shape: the inner city took the worst of it, with many historical buildings collapsed. Some very ancient medieval boroughs were grazed. Central Italy is a region with high seismic activity, and a long strip of deadly quakes. Rescuers are still digging in the rubbles, hoping to find other survivors. The rescuing organizations (civil defence, firefighters, hospitals, etc) seem to be working well, given the circumstances.

Honestly? No.

What a clod. :wtf:

This is terrible, and gets worse with every report (as these things always seem to do). Hopefully, the worst is over and there will be no more aftershocks.
