14th Doctor Speculation

CuriousCaitian

Commander

Not speculating on who will play the 14th, as that's just been announced - Ncuti Gatwa - but on the traits and accoutrements of the 14th, such as:-

Personality. What kind of Doctor will 14 be? Whimsical? Mysterious? Dark? Physical? What will their defining character traits be?

Costume. How will they be dressed? What colours or accessories might they favour? Will naturally tie in to personality.

TARDIS control room. Will it be the same? A revision or evolution of the current one? Or something entirely new? Or will it hark back to prior ones?

Basically, think Build-A-Bear, just with the Doctor. Have fun, and in time, we'll see if any of us got anywhere near. :-)

Costume wise I think something like this:39B8D285-CFEC-4C7C-BA8D-01A3926694BE.jpeg

Gold would suit the actor. Maybe the patterns could be Gallifreyan rather than flowers though?

Maybe a bit more contemporary and practical…

Borrowing from Joel Dommett's wardrobe, huh? :-p

Not a bad idea, though maybe with subtler patterning.
No idea who he is busy just googled… :luvlove:

I think that this Doctor needs to avoid subtleness, a costume that says “I am here!!!” in a way that is not too gaudy or 6th Doctor like.

A more colourful idea:

I do think that he would look great in gold though! Maybe it’s because I saw a picture of the actor with hair colour which would match this suit. :bolian:

I think the 14th Doctor will retain the tradition of all Doctors being smart, otherworldly, occasionally funny, occasionally terse, frequently kind, authoritative, courageous, and always willing to fight the good fight.

What Gatwa might bring into the role could be a certain level of cheekiness and a bit of savviness perhaps. His could be a Doctor that wasn't born yesterday in regards to dealing with people, especially Humans. His philosophy in certain situations could be hope for the best, but expect the worst.

As far as his costume, I hope that he isn't dressed too flamboyantly (lots of colors) or too casually (no hip-hop or skaterboi gear please). Maybe his costume would be something that wouldn't look too out of place in different time periods...

No clue as to what RTD has planned. but I'm hoping for something akin to your middle paragraph.

If not too casual or cheap-looking (e.g. Doctors 9 and 10 in particular)... no outfit is going to truly blend in anywhere, even if it's all beige with delicate orange piping. The Doctor is a true maverick, always had funny clothes, and will wear whatever seems right at the time.

RTD's two Doctors are perhaps the most normally dressed of the whole set so I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to that. I'm sure there'll still be something weird about his outfit though, hopefully in a good way!

I'm expecting that the TARDIS console room will be a complete reimagining with nothing in common with Thirteen's TARDIS. At least, I'm hoping that. Please RTD, give us a new console room! And make it look awesome!

At times Capaldi was the most normally dressed Doctor, but at other times quite the reverse. For me I'd like them to return to a sort of retro 20th Century look for the Doctor. I much preferred Smith's initial look for example, the 1950s absent minded professor look. The purple/Victorian look suited him slightly less well, in part because it had that uniform look akin to late Tom/Davison/Colin/McCoy. I dislike Whittaker's in part for the same reason. I want the Doctor's outfit to return to that plucked from a charity shop feel (ironic that 13s outfit supposedly was!)

I've seen several mock-ups of outfits that look to suit Gatwa, in particular a 1960s Andy Warhol kinda look with a polo/turtle necked sweater under a blazer. Hard to know how he'll play it but he has a natural suaveness to him so a toned down Pertwee look might work.

The costume designers have mostly got it right with the outfits of modern Doctors. Even Capaldi's look made sense when you realise that sometimes he's stage magician and sometimes he's a street magician (but he's always a magician).

I really liked the African inspired colours to Martin's shirt mixed with a more traditional suit over the top, but will the same look work for Gatwa?

Personality wise I hope he can imbue the great age of the Doctor. That was one thing I thought Whittaker rarely did, a return to the old man in a young body of Smith or the "I've seen terrible things" hauntedness of Eccleston and (sometimes) Tennant would be interesting.

Given he's Scottish his natural accent isn't very Scottish, or at least it wasn't when he was interviewed on the red carpet the other day. Though you could definitely see a lilt to it. I like the idea of his Doctor sounding like he's from everywhere (A sort of Highlander where are you from "Lot's of different places." kinda thing).

Exciting times.

The discussion of the Doctor's costume choices reminds me what Matt Smith said when he was initially given a Pirates of the Caribbean of costume, but felt it came off as something someone would dress the Doctor as, vs what the Doctor would wear. Hopefully that line of thinking follows through with whatever Gatwa ends up with.

If things we've been told about the BBC Centenary Special turn out to be true, RTD changing the TARDIS interior would be a completely arbitrary decision that would please some people and alienate others, and since arbitrarily redesigning the interior isn't something we've seen him do, there's no basis for automatically assuming that he's going to.
