14 Dumbest Things In Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (whatculture.com)

Whatculture is doing their thing with humor again so don't blame me and they chose to write that article at a bad time when today is stupid April Fool's Day

here's the list of the dumbest things in Star Trek III

1. the space dock garage
2. Kirk behaving "illogically"
3. the firepower attacks with Enterprise and the klingon bird of prey
4. dereliction of duty. Saavick when dealing with young Spock
5. Genesis planet going poof
6. Shields first, Evasive manuevers second
7. Missing Mama Marcus
8. Jumping to conclusions
9. Kirk being commended, not court martialed.
10. No tractor beam to haul the Enterprise back in where they were making a run for it back to the Genesis planet
11. Genesis planet's name somehow being known by everyone in the galaxy all of a sudden
12. Enterprise being the only ship around again. Where the heck are the other Federation ships yada yada
13. Spock's torpedo coffin and him coming back to life
14. The Genesis Defect Redux. Such as the microbes and life forms evolving/mutating on the Genesis planet

I wrote that. It just happened to go live on April 1st...as if that mattered.

Those pieces are all tongue in cheek but they're all based on things that don't make logical sense in the context of the stories that contain them.

Ever consider that maybe listing all the items kinda spoils the whole point of a countdown?

sure you did, buddy.

Also there were other Star Trek BBS forum members here that were too lazy to go to the whatculture website to look at the stuff thats why I had to type the stuff here.

Maybe if other people would spend the time going to the actual website to click on the article pages instead of them forcing me to type out the whole damn list then maybe they would have entertained themselves over at whatculture.

For #7 Carol Marcus does get a mention on the Genesis tape that Kirk retaped. He said the Genesis device "as developed by Drs. Carol and David Marcus." That's the only mention she gets, granted, but they do make a token effort to mention her. Thinking about this I find it interesting that Khan is not named once during the film. Obviously, unless you lived under a rock I think everyone seeing this movie knows what happened in TWOK, at least the major plot points. But no mention is otherwise made of Khan at all.

A lot of the critiques are spot on. I watch slasher films so I'm used to the 'suspension of disbelief' motto. Star Trek is certainly not alone it the ridiculous plot points it uses sometimes. If you dig too deep the whole movie will fall apart, and you could probably make a similar list for all 13 movies (and probably many episodes of the various shows in fact). Sometimes I just go with it. If the movie is great drama, it helps you to overlook the stupidity of some of the plot points a bit more. TWOK is a good example. There are a number of plot holes there but since it's generally considered a great film the faults are a bit easier to overlook. I find TFF to be the weakest of the films so the faults seem more glaring there.

But even still, these lists are entertaining to read. When you do think about it the plot holes are pretty glaring. A few you can maybe poo-poo away with a little creativity. I enjoy reading Star Trek novels and sometimes our authors find creative ways to explain some of that away, sometimes in ways that even make a little sense. Even the list here notes that a bit. In some cases it's just poor editing that leads to a plot hole, like the whole Grissom destruction sequence. Others are a bit more glaring like how Kirk manages to steal the Enterprise. It makes for great drama (to this day I'm not sure if Scotty really got the doors open or did Starfleet just open the doors figuring the Excelsior would catch them pretty easily not realizing Scotty sabotaged them--after all I can't imagine Starfleet would want the Spacedock damaged or even destroyed by the Enterprise ramming into the doors, not to mention would they really Kirk and co. to be killed if they thought they could be captured?).

“Had to”?
The more clicks things get, the better they’re regarded, and the writer, Bugs Bunny there (aka our kinsman, the major Molyneaux), more likely to get future assignments.
