1080i vs 1080p?

Okk, thanks all.. It's just been something I've been curious about. My Dad has a 1080i tv that does not do 1080p. I know the xbox 360 does 1080p, it's just that his tv only does 1080i, which is okay.. We don't even have a bluray player, though the upconversion on our Oppo dvd player is great...

Just set your Xbox over to 1080i and I believe it will automatically upconvert all your games and DVDs into that signal.

360 will run 1080p capable games..

But.

You need a 360 with HDMI output to upconvert DVD's

If you're watching 1080p and the same thing at 1080i, you probably can't tell the difference, generally speaking.

If you know what to look for, you may be able to tell the difference.

You really don't have to be looking for it.
The colors are deeper and the image is smoother and it's definitely noticable.
Deeper colors? Come on, what kind of marketing monkey spank is that?

I do prefer progress over interlaced, but there is no difference in their ability to reproduce colors.

I think the main reason lots of people think 1080p is so much better is because they compare a blu-ray source to some overly compressed over the air crap. Not really a fair comparison.

Well, to be fair, how else are people supposed to get HD material? Either they get it via a channel coming into their homes (be it over-the-air or cable/satellite, either of which is likely to be equally compressed), or Blu-Ray.

Right, but 1080i over the air doesn't look like crap compared to 1080p through blu-ray because of the fact that it's not 1080p. This is one of those things where 90 percent of people really wouldn't tell the difference in a 'fair' comparison between 1080i and 1080p. It doesn't really matter, 1080i is already practically extinct, and 720p is for low end and smaller screens where being short changed a bit on resolution isn't even going to matter.

^ It's more likely that it's not because of the resolution difference, but because different stations use different compression algorithms and more/less bandwidth.

Really? I know for Games you can go component for 1080p.

But I think that now makes sense b/c when I put my DVD for James bond my TV said 720 as my resolution. Is there a reason why it won't go 1080?
